CAF moves to protect AFCON integrity after quarter final turmoil

RABAT-(MaraviPost)-The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken a firm stance to safeguard the credibility of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 following troubling scenes witnessed during the quarter final stage of the tournament.

In a statement released on Monday, CAF confirmed it has opened formal investigations into incidents that occurred during two high profile quarter final matches involving Cameroon versus Morocco and Algeria versus Nigeria.

According to CAF, preliminary match reports and video footage point to potentially unacceptable conduct by some players and officials, prompting the continental body to act swiftly to uphold discipline and professionalism.

The matters have since been referred to CAF’s Disciplinary Board, which will independently assess the evidence and determine whether any individuals should face sanctions for breaching competition regulations.

CAF emphasized that no conclusions have yet been drawn but stressed that appropriate action will be taken should any wrongdoing be established following the investigations.

Beyond the pitch, CAF also revealed that it is reviewing footage related to an alleged incident involving members of the media in the mixed zone, an area designated for controlled post match interactions.

The governing body expressed serious concern over any form of misconduct that undermines the orderly running of matches, especially behaviour directed at match officials or tournament organizers.

CAF reiterated that respect for referees and competition staff is a cornerstone of fair play and remains non-negotiable at all CAF-sanctioned events.

CAF said its intervention is aimed not only at addressing the specific incidents but also at sending a clear message that discipline and professionalism must prevail regardless of the stakes involved.

The outcomes of the investigations are expected to be announced in due course, with CAF maintaining that the integrity of the competition remains its top priority.
