Cape Town Named One of the World’s Top Cities for Art & Culture in 2026

Cape town
Cape Town has just been named one of the world’s top cities for art and culture. In Time Out’s newly released “World’s Best Cities for Culture” 2026 list, the Mother City ranks in the top 5, cementing its place as a global cultural hotspot.
Time Out compiled its annual list of the world’s best cultural cities by surveying 24,000 residents across more than 150 cities, who rated the quality and affordability of their local arts and culture scenes. Their feedback, covering everything from theatre and music to comedy and festivals, was combined with insights from Time Out’s global panel of editors, writers, and cultural experts. Only the highest-scoring cities from each country were included to highlight the top global cultural destinations.

Cape Town to the World

Cape Town has officially placed 5th in the rankings, with London (1st), Paris, New York, and Berlin rounding off the top five. Time Out’s ranking highlights Cape Town’s richly layered and ever-evolving creative scene, where African innovation meets world-class cultural expression. From major institutions like Zeitz MOCAA and the sculpture gardens at Norval Foundation, to performances by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra at the historic City Hall, the city continues to blend heritage with contemporary creativity. Independent culture thrives at beloved spaces like the Labia Theatre, while comedy and theatre remain central at the Baxter Theatre Centre and Artscape Theatre Centre.
Cape Town’s cultural calendar is anchored by major events such as the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, the largest of its kind in Africa, and the monthly First Thursdays event, which turns the city into a walkable gallery. More recently, immersive experiences like LUMENOCITY and collaborations such as Veuve Clicquot’s Emotions of the Sun x Magnum Photos have added fresh momentum to the scene.According to the survey, Capetonians gave their city an 84% approval rating for culture and 60% for affordability, with festivals and live music ranking as its strongest cultural offerings.
