Cashgate suspect former Accountant General Kandoje still in Police custody

LILONGWE (Maravipost)—The High Court in Lilongwe is today, Tuesday March 31 2015, expected to hear bail application for David Kandoje, second Principal Secretary in Malawi’s Ministry of Health, who was arrested for allegedly authorizing payment of two cheques amounting to K500 million to Staddal Building contractors without appropriate documents.

The former Accountant General, who was arrested last Thursday by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), is still in police custody.

Kandoje may also face abuse of office and improper payment of public money and theft charges.

Kandoje’s lawyer Khumbo Soko and ACB Deputy Director Reyneck Matemba confirmed that the suspect’s bail application hearing is on today.

However, Soko expressed concern on the period that his client has been in police custody considering that the 48-hour rule has already expired.
