Do not overlook Africa’s trillion-dollar food and agribusiness sector, African Development Bank chief tells investors at World Food Prize Dialogue

President Sahle-Work Zewde of Ethiopia and African Development Bank chief Akinwumi Adesina discuss Ethiopia’s remarkable journey to food security during the Borlaug Dialogue. Today, Ethiopia, for the first time in its history, is self-sufficient in wheat production and has started exporting to its neighbours.

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, 31 October 2023 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/-Africa’s food and agribusiness will be worth an estimated US$1 trillion by 2030, African Development Bank President Dr Akinwumi Adesina told participants of the World Food Prize Foundation’s Norman E. Borlaug Dialogue(link is external) in Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday.

The annual event in America’s agricultural heartland, revolved around this year’s theme of “harnessing change,” with delegates and panellists exploring innovative ideas to shore up innovation, adaptation, and diversification, and mechanisms for improving resilience, recovery from shocks, and sustainable systems to feed the world.

Several world leaders are actively bolstering food production and food security in Africa. This includes coming together for a landmark global Feed Africa summit in Dakar (the Dakar 2 Summit) last January.

The continent, which is home to 65% of the world’s remaining uncultivated arable land, ironically imports most of its food. African leaders are intent on ensuring that their countries are self-sufficient in food and become food exporters. There is a realisation that by 2050, the global population will reach nine billion, creating a pressing need for Africa to increase agricultural productivity to meet rising demands for food.

The African Development Bank, which is leading the charge to feed Africa, played an active part in the Borlaug Dialogue. At a session titled “From Dakar 2 to Des Moines” on Thursday, Adesina highlighted the achievements of the Dakar 2 summit, which the Bank organised in conjunction with the Senegalese government and the African Union.

Africa’s food and agribusiness will be worth an estimated US$1 trillion by 2030, African Development Bank President Dr Akinwumi Adesina told participants of the World Food Prize Foundation’s Norman E. Borlaug Dialogue in Des Moines, Iowa, on 26 October 2023.

Adesina explained how 34 African leaders endorsed country food and agriculture delivery compacts that produced action- and outcome-driven plans to ensure food security and unlock the continent’s full agricultural potential within five years. This is in line with the core of the Bank’s Feed Africa strategy, which it launched in 2016. Since then, he added, the strategy has supported more than 250 million people, who have benefitted from improved agriculture technologies.

Adesina said partners had committed over $70 billion to support the food compacts. The Bank is expected to provide $10 billion over the next five years.

The Bank head said Dakar 2 reflected the collective resolve of African leaders to ensure the continent feeds itself. One of the leaders, President Sahle-Work Zewde of Ethiopia, who was at the Borlaug Dialogue, said: “As African leaders, we are all committed to self-sufficiency in food production. Today, Ethiopia, for the first time in its history, is self-sufficient in wheat production and is a wheat exporter to its neighbours.”

Zewde acknowledged that this groundbreaking achievement was helped by the African Development Bank’s Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) initiative. TAAT has distributed more than 100,000 tons of certified seeds of heat-tolerant wheat varieties, increasing Ethiopia’s wheat production by 1.6 million metric tons in 2023.

Further underlining the high level of African participation at the Borlaug Dialogue, Vice President Kashim Shettima of Nigeria spoke about the importance of leadership, which he said was essential to feed Africa and develop the continent. “A nation falls or rises dependent on the quality of its leadership,” he emphasised.

Nigeria Vice President Kashim Shettima and African Development Bank chief Akinwumi Adesina share a light moment during a side event on transforming African agriculture through Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Nigeria’s Plateau State—speaking at a World Food Prize side event on transforming African agriculture through Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZs)—also emphasised the essence of good leadership. “The time has come to deal with the elephant in the room, and that is corruption,” he said. “We are serious about this, and we want investors to know that investing in Plateau State is a win-win.” Governor Mutfwang also stressed the importance of incentivising investors by reducing unnecessary administrative bottlenecks.

The African Development Bank has already committed US$853 million to public-sector initiated SAPZs and successfully mobilised financing of $661 million alongside its co-financing partners. Collectively, the partners are investing more than $1.5 billion to establish 25 agro-industrial zones and supporting ecosystems in 13 countries.

Adesina invited investors and other stakeholders to invest confidently in the African food and agribusiness sector. He said political will was strong and that results on the ground showed tremendous promise.

Quinn, President Emeritus, World Food Prize Foundation, and to his left, Nigerian VP Kashim Shettima and Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde. Third from left of photo is Governor Caleb Mutfwang. The African Development Bank is a regular contributor to the Borlaug Dialogue. Akinwumi Adesina who was the World Food Prize laureate in 2017, is recognised for his exceptional and innovative work in the African food system, including eliminating corruption in the fertiliser industry in Nigeria, leveraging resources for smallholder farmers, and increasing for crop and production efficiency, during his previous tenure as agriculture minister.

This year’s Borlaug laureate is Heidi Kuhn(link is external), recognised for her farmer-focused development model and work that revitalises farmlands, food security, livelihoods and resilience in conflicted affected regions around the world.

The African Development Bank’s initiatives to feed Africa drew strong commendation from Ambassador Kenneth M. Quinn, President Emeritus of the World Food Prize Foundation, and the Foundation’s President, Ambassador Terry Branstad.

Airtel Africa’s revenue, customer base soar

ABUJA-(MaraviPost)-The continent’s leading telecommunications and mobile money services provider, Airtel Africa, has registered growth in both revenue and its customer base across the continent.

Airtel Africa operates in 14 countries in East, West, and Central Africa including Malawi.

According to the year-end statement dated September 30, 2023, made available to The Maravi Post, the company’s total customer base grew by 9.7% to 147.7 million, “As the penetration of mobile data and mobile money services
continued to rise, driving a 23.0% increase in data customers to 59.8 million and a 23.1% increase in mobile money
customers to 36.5 million”.

Reads part of the report, “Constant currency ARPU growth of 9.8% was driven by increased usage across voice, data, and mobile money. Mobile money transaction value increased by 45.3% in constant currency, with Q2’24 annualized transaction value of $116bn in reported currency”.

On financial performance, the report says, “Revenue in constant currency grew by 19.7%, with reported currency revenues up by 2.3% to $2,623m. In Q2’24, reported currency revenues declined by 4.7% reflecting a full quarter’s impact of the Nigerian naira devaluation in June 2023. Q2’24 constant currency revenues increased by 19.0%.

“Whilst reported currency revenue growth was impacted by currency devaluation, all segments delivered double-digit
constant currency revenue growth. Across the Group mobile services revenue grew by 18.3% in constant currency,
driven by voice revenue growth of 11.5% and data revenue growth of 28.1%. Mobile money revenue grew by 30.9%
in constant currency.

Airtel Africa Group Chief Executive Officer Olusegun Ogunsanya therefore expressed satisfaction over the strides the company made despite hurdles.

Ogunsanya said the numbers in penetration of data usage and voice services show that customers want to use Airtel telecommunications services.

“I am pleased to report a strong operating performance for the Group despite foreign exchange headwinds in many of our markets. The resilient growth in voice, data, and mobile money usage levels reflects the inherent demand for these essential services across our footprint, and our six-pillar ‘win-with’ strategy continues to ensure we capture this growth opportunity by expanding our customer base and providing the platform to enable increased usage across the network. This strong momentum is supported by continued cost efficiencies which enabled further EBITDA
margin expansion.

“As reported in July 2023, our results for the first quarter were significantly impacted by the changes to the FX market in
Nigeria, introduced by the Central Bank. Whilst the changes are required for the long-term benefit of the Nigerian economy, the immediate impact of the naira devaluation continues to weigh on our reported financial performance in the period,” he said.

Ogunsanya adds, “Our focus remains to enhance long-term value by continuing to drive sustained and efficient growth. Over the last five years, we have delivered constant currency revenue and EBITDA CAGR of 17.1% and 20.7% respectively, allowing us to further derisk the balance sheet and improve profitability across the Group.

“Looking forward, the delivery of affordable and reliable telecom and mobile money services across our markets remains
our key focus. Our strong operating performance continues to make us a stronger and bigger company, which is well-positioned to deliver against the growth opportunities these markets offer.

Airtel Africa offers an integrated suite of telecom solutions to its subscribers, including mobile voice and data services as well as mobile money services, both nationally and internationally.

Minister Chang’anamuno lures Tanzania mining investors to Malawi

DODOMA-(MaraviPost)-Minister of Mining, Monica Chang’anamuno is urging Tanzanian investors to bank their finances in Malawi.

She was speaking at the official opening ceremony of the Tanzania Mining and Investment Forum at Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in Tanzania and urged mining investors to come to Malawi.

The forum was held under the theme, “Unlocking Tanzania’s Future Mining Potential.”

In her address, the Minister highlighted that the Government of Malawi recognizes that mining is one of the key growth sectors that can significantly contribute to the socio-economic growth and development of a country.

She further highlighted that the mineral sector in Malawi is still a green field mineral investment area endowed with a lot of mineral resources of economic importance.

The rich mineral endowment is due to its geological setting within the East African Rift System.

“The minerals include Rare Earth Elements, Niobium, Uranium, Coal, Bauxite, Lithium, Graphite, Limestone, Copper, Phosphate, Apatite, Rutile, Titanium, Gold, Gypsum, Nickel, Iron, Dimension stones such as sodalite, Granite, lithium among others,” she said.

“The occurrence of these minerals, peace, and stability in the country and deliberate political will to put the mining sector among the top priority list of economic activities for the social economic development of the country among others, create a conducive environment for serious and capable investors to invest in mining in Malawi,” explained Minister.

Chang’anamuno therefore urged investors who were present at the Forum to extend their mining Investments to Malawi and that the Government of Malawi provides sufficient incentives for mining investment, realizing the capital-intensive nature of the sector.

NBS Bank awards Cyclone Freddy heroes

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Listed commercial bank, NBS Bank, recently joined the Public Relations Society of Malawi (PRSM) in recognizing and awarding several people who went out of their way to help and rescue others in their communities during the Cyclone Freddy disaster early this year.

NBS Bank awarded the 12 individuals with certificates and cash during this year’s PRSM lakeshore conference held in Mangochi from 5th to 7th October 2023.

NBS Bank Public Relations Officer Olivia Chiligo said they decided to reward the Cyclone Freddy heroes for exhibiting extraordinary acts of kindness, bravery, and selflessness during and in the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy to serve the community.

“Cyclone Freddy was an event that tested the strength and character of our nation, and in the face of adversity, we witnessed countless acts of heroism. People opened their doors to shelter others, workers went above and beyond their duty to assist, and individuals risked their own lives to rescue and help those in need. These are the stories that inspire us all. They remind us that even in the darkest hours, the spirit of compassion, unity, and solidarity shines through.”

“PRSM’s decision to recognize these heroes aligns perfectly with NBS Bank’s commitment to community development and our belief in the power of collective action. We firmly believe that by acknowledging and celebrating these acts of kindness, we not only honour those who went above and beyond, but we also send a powerful message to the world about the resilience and unity of the people of Malawi,” said Chiligo.

Among those awarded were three Marine Police officers from Mangochi and Monkey Bay who went missing after the boat they were traveling in capsized on the Shire River as they were going to rescue people who were trapped by the Cyclone.

Despite having their boat capsized, the three continued with their mission after being rescued by some members of the community.

“It was a near-death situation when our boat capsized. We are very grateful to God and the community members who searched for us until we were found. We could not have abandoned the mission because we committed to save and protect the people of Malawi that is what kept us going,” said Lucia Nthala from Monkey Bay station.

PRSM President, Benson Linje, said there are a lot of people who risked their lives in trying to reduce the suffering of people who were affected by the Cyclone in their respective communities and beyond, but their efforts are not recognized.

“The way these people conducted themselves is inspiring hope that there are people in this country who are passionate about changing the lives of people who require support. Other people could help but they did not, so it is worth recognizing those who left their comfort zones for the sake of others,” said Linje.

Linje thanked NBS Bank for sponsoring the awards which he said have managed to motivate the people to continue doing good to people in need.
