Environmental degradation affecting fish farming in Zomba

Fish farmers from Sub Traditional Authority Nkapita in Zomba have expressed concern of the early drying up of rivers which has affected supply of water to their fish ponds.

One of the fish farmers from Group village head Nkasala, Bakali Malosa said the drying up of rivers is as a result of degradation in most river banks.

‘’Our ponds are not surviving because rivers are not supplying enough water throughout the year as it was used to be some years back, “ Malosa said.

He said this is forcing many people to quit fish farming.

Malosa added that previously, rivers in the area could supply water for fish farming and irrigation farming throughout the year, but things are not the same nowadays.

He further said because of this early drying up of fish ponds, farmers are forced to harvest their fish before October.

“Such a situation is not good because we may end up losing some of the fish species,” Malosa said.

He called for the need to restore the environment mainly along the river banks to reverse the situation.

‘’We need to check our river banks, restore the degraded resources to get our rivers back to the normal way of supplying water throughout the year.”

In a separate interview, a forestry official for the area Aida Moffat acknowledged the problem but was quick to say that efforts to reverse the situation are in place.

‘’We are engaging community members in restoring natural resources to minimize exposure of the rivers to sunlight,” Moffat said.
She further said that department of forestry formulated committees in each village to conduct patrols in Zomba Mountain forest which is source of all rivers in the area.

Moffat hailed organizations such as United Purpose, Shire River Basin Management Project and the Zomba Forestry Department for the support they render to communities towards environmental conservation.

Nkapita area and the whole of Zomba district face threats of environmental degradation due to rampant illegal charcoal production.

Minister Mwanamvekha warns ‘bone-idle’ civil servants to improve or get fired

Members of staff in the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Food Security have been told to improve on their performance or risk being fired from the Civil Service.

Minister of Agriculture, Joseph Mwanamvekha, sounded the warning in Blantyre on Monday during an interface meeting with members of staff from Blantyre Agriculture Development Division (ADD).

Mwanamvekha said he has been receiving reports that some officers were absconding from work, taking unnecessary leaves and that some were reporting for work very late.

He said this was disheartening considering that the Agriculture Ministry is the back bone of the country’s economy.

“In case you don’t know, our ministry is very key and that is why it is getting a huge chunk of money in as far as budget allocations are concerned. It is therefore sad to hear that some officers report for work at their own time with some not coming at all. This must stop or else we will take stiff action against them,” Mwanamvekha warned.

The minister said though there were some challenges that the ministry was facing such as morbidity, unfilled posts and limited funding, these should not be taken as excuses for officers to be absconding from work.

“We are also planning to transfer officers who have overstayed in particular offices because that also contributes to non-performance,” he said.

Moreover, the minster called on District Commissioners (DCs) who are controlling officers in the decentralized set up to discipline staff members who are not performing.

“May I ask District Commissioners to deal with officers who are not complying with government rules and regulations. Let the DCs discuss if we could transfer some of these staff from one district to another as a way of reducing rates of absenteeism from work,” said Mwanamvekha.

In his remarks, Bennet Nkasala, District Commissioner for Blantyre assured the minister that he would make sure that officers absconding from work are dealt with accordingly.

“DCs now have the power to suspend, transfer or take any action they feel is worth against any officer who fails to deliver as mandated. We will monitor the officers and should there be anyone found absconding from work, we will deal with him or her accordingly,” explained Nkasala.

On his part, Martin Kausi Acting Programme Manager for Blantyre ADD concurred with the DC that appropriate action would be taken against lazy officers.

CFTC warns retailers on withholding change from customers

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)- The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) on Monday noted with great concern over some retail chain stores ofhaving the tendency to withhold change from consumers or offer them sweets in lieu of change.

According to the Commission, the withheldig of change is usually in the following denominations – Twenty Malawi Kwacha; Ten Malawi Kwacha; Five Malawi Kwacha, and One Malawi Kwacha.

In a press statement made available to Maravi Post, CFTC informs all Retailers that the practice of withholding change from consumers or offering them sweets in lieu of change is unfair, unreasonable and unconscionable as it leaves consumers worse off than they were before the transaction.

The state trading body added that retailers have an obligation to have all denominations of Malawi’s legal tender to facilitate fair trading conditions for consumers and the market at large.

The Commission further said that Section 43(1)(g) of the Competition and Fair Trading Act makes it an offence for any person to engage in unconscionable conduct in carrying out trade in goods and services.

“In view of this, the Commission wishes to appeal to all Retailers to cease and desist from unfair trading practices such as withholding change from consumers.

“Appropriate penalties will be imposed on any Retailer found withholding change from consumers or offering them sweets in lieu of change”, reads the statement signed by it’s Executive Director, Charlotte Malonda.

TEVETA to adopt German TEVET system

To beat the capacity challenge the Authority is facing where out of 12,000 applicants it can only accommodate 2000, Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocation Education and Training Authority (TEVETA) was planning on adopting the German Tevet System.
TEVETA Board Chairperson, Gilbert Chilinde, disclosed this in an interview on Friday after the official opening of TEVETA 2017 National Executive Conference in Mangochi which was graced by Vice President, Dr. Saulos Chilima.
He said the German TEVET System allows an individual straight from secondary school to start training under experienced master trainer in an industry or company and that this allows the person to gain experience while working with a particular industry.
“The advantage of this model is that by the time one finishes the third year the person is well equipped with knowledge and they can easily sign a contract with that industry and become a full time employee,” explained Chilinde.
He continued: “With this model, for the first year the company may appear to be losing to have employed unskilled person but it will win out by end of third year.”
The TEVETA Board Chair said after gaining experience and skills, the person can either choose to stay with the company or graduate to form own company.
The TEVETA Board Chair described the new system as a calling that Malawi must embrace as government continues to construct community technical colleges.
“We need to think outside the box and use another strategy to bring satisfaction to the people we train while we address the market needs,” Chilinde said.
The Board Chair expressed optimism that by adopting German TEVET system into Malawi it could make Malawi TEVET system become one of the best systems in the SADC region.
The TEVETA 2017 National Executive Conference brought together about 40 executive corporate members from across the country to brainstorm on its operations under the theme: “Steering organisations through business turbulence”.

Vice President Chilima urges private sector to survive competitive industry

Vice President, Dr. Saulos Chilima, on Friday challenged the private sector to employ strategies that will keep the corporate world afloat even in times of economic hardships.
Chilima made the remarks during official opening of the 2017 Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA) National Executive Conference held at Club Makokola Retreat in Mangochi where Chief Executive Officers, Directors and Managers of about 40 private and public institutions gathered.
The Vice President said it is pleasing that TEVETA had drawn together leaders of both giant and upcoming businesses, companies and organizations in the country as one way of promoting innovative business practices for increased productivity.
He challenged the corporate executives to use the skills they would acquire through the conference to re-engineer their respective businesses and forge ahead.
“Any strategy can be excellent but the difference lies in the execution. So, make sure you utilize and implement what will be discussed here to improve your businesses…we need to turn around our economy from a predominantly importing and consuming country to one that is producing and exporting and this shift cannot be done if the private sector is left out in all development phases,” he said.
The Veep further gave the corporate executives a few tips on how to survive turbulence and remain strong in the corporate world urging the corporate executives to never panic or carry out knee jerk decisions but stay focused like a Lion on the hunt and deploy short term interventions while maintaining the long term view.
He assured the business captains that government is doing everything possible to ensure that the business environment in the country is conducive for them to thrive.
The conference was part of TEVETA’s initiative of Private Sector Training Programme (PSTPs) aimed at ensuring increased productivity at the workplace and also supporting the attainment of a conducive environment for private sector growth.
The conference was held under the theme, “Steering Organizations through Business Turbulence,” and the guest speaker was South African branding and reputation guru, Thebe Ikalafeng.
On his part, Ikalafeng also took the participants through a presentation titled, “ Innovative business practices for increased productivity in a turbulent business environment.”

Zomba city gets MK287 million Solar lights points

ZOMBA-(MaraviPost)- The Zomba City Council (ZCC) this week became the first District Council in Malawi to install solar powered street lights.
With about MK287 million, the project will install about 261 street lights across the city.
The lights are expected to cover the city’s boundary along the M3 Road, which is from 4 Miles to Chikupira.
In an interview with The Maravi Post, Mercy Chaluma, ZCC’s spokesperson, disclosed that currently a third of the lights have already been installed.
Chaluma said the project is being implemented with funds from the Governmeny’s Roads Fund Administration (RFA).
She added that the Council opted for solar powered lights as a way of promoting green energy and reducing the pressure on Malawi’s hydroelectricity.
“Apart from that, the solar lights are sustainable and the Council will not be pressured with electricity bills.
“Apart from the M3 Road, the lights are also expected to cover the Flea Market Ring Road, which is currently under construction; and Nkulichi Road up to State House,” said Chaluma.
The lights are self-operational as they switch on automatically, when darkness falls, and switch off when the day breaks.
Chaluma adds; “The Council noted that some people have fears that maybe g the solar lights will not be as powerfully lit during the rainy season and in winter, but they should be assured that the lights store sufficient heat and they don’t need much light to lighten up, so they should be able to give enough light even during these seasons.
“Among other things, the street lights are expected to boost the City’s economic activities because people will not have to leave their business premises early because of darkness; they will boost security, and will also add on to the existing beauty of the City.”
On security measures, the Council is calling on the public to help in this area as it cannot guard over all 261 electric poles and lights.
“We have therefore, been encouraging residents to report anyone vandalising the lights.
“Zomba being a military City, we are hopeful that the lights will be safe also with the help of our military along with the police,” she assures.

MACRA hit on mobile money service fraudsters

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) noteds with great concern the presence of tricksters on the market that are robbing unsuspecting individuals of money through mobile money services offered by Airtel Malawi Limited and TNM Limited in Malawi.
In their scheme, the alleged criminals disguise themselves as workers from the above mentioned mobile phone companies.
“They dupe the unsuspecting clients by making them believe that they have won prizes such as bags of cement, iron sheets and money, even though the targeted members of the public did not participate in any competition or promotion,” MACRA reported in a press statement released this week.
The excited client is then asked to send a specified amount of money through Airtel Money or Mpamba, which are mobile money services by Airtel Malawi Limited and TNM Limited, respectively.
To get the trust of their victims, the tricksters claim that MACRA provided them with their contact numbers.
Reads part of the statement “This is regrettable. It is MACRA’s responsibility to protect the interests of ICT consumers in Malawi. Such interests include their privacy and personal safety. The general public is therefore being informed that MACRA does not issue phone numbers to people and any claim to that effect is aimed at defrauding the public.”
MACRA further sternly warns the fraudstrs engaged in these malpractices, that the law will take its course once they are found duping the public in this manner.
The Authority appeals to the public to be vigilant so that they do not fall into the trap of promotions and competitions that do not exist.
MACRA further urges the public to quickly report any such malpractices to the Police or the relevant service provider for the necessary action.
