Word from the High Court in Lilongwe is the resumption of the case has been moved to 7 February, trial of former Justice Minister Ralphael Kasambara, Pika Manondo, Oswald Lutepo and two others for the attempted murder of the Director of National Budget at the Finance Ministry, Paul Mphwiyo residence.

The case which was supposed to resume today, 29 January 2015 has now been adjourned to 7 February 2015.

Iceland Donates ISK 10 Million to Malawi Flood Response

Minister for Foreign Affairs Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson announced that Iceland would provide UNICEF ISK 10 million (USD 75,000, EUR 66,000) in humanitarian assistance to Malawi in light of recent floods in the country. The floods are said to be the worst in Malawi, which has a population of 16 million, in 20 years.

The government of Malawi has issued a state of emergency and called on the international community for assistance following the floods which has left roughly one third of the country submerged.

Many people have died in the floods and more than 120,000 people have been displaced. Schools, homes and crops have been destroyed.

Malawi and Iceland started bilateral development cooperation in 1989. 

Malawi on high flood alert as heavy rainfall is forecast

Blantyre, Malawi, Jan. 28 (MaraviPost) _ Malawi, over half of its land surface is currently reeling under unprecedented flooding, is on high alert with weathermen forecasting heavy rains and storms ‘in the coming few days’, especially in the flood-prone Southern Region.

Elina Kululanga, head of public weather services in the Department of Climate Change and Weather Services, said in a media statement Wednesday this will be a ‘wet week’ nationwide but a storm will hit the flood-prone Southern Region.

LILONGWE, Malawi, January 28 (MaraviPost): The sensational trial of former Justice Minister Ralph Kasambara, Pika Manondo, Oswald Lutepo and two others accused of attempted murder of the Director of National Budget at the Finance Ministry, Paul Mphwiyo, has resumed in the High court in Lilongwe.

The delays since November were due to the strike by the Judicial supporting staff who were demanding a pay rise.

Malawi: Flood relief must be gender responsive

Lilongwe, 28 January: President Peter Mutharika declared Malawi a disaster zone earlier this month after floods hit 15 of the country’s 28 districts, leaving more than 200 people dead or missing, and displacing 174 000 people across the country. Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs says 638 000 people have been affected, while Oxfam’s Situation Report indicates that, although data on victims has not yet been desegregated, women and children have been disproportionately affected by the foods. Mutharika might be faulted on his projection of less growth due to the unprecedented Floods in Malawi

ATLANTA, Georgia, January 28 (MaraviPost): Malawi’s growth in 2015 will fall short of the 5.8 percent projected at the beginning of the year because of the damage massive floods have caused to the country’s farming industry, said President Peter Mutharika.

“The damage caused by the flood disaster to the economy is estimated at 23.9 billion kwacha ($53 million), excluding the cost of the relief program currently underway,” Mutharika said Tuesday in his state of the nation address, broadcast from the capital, Lilongwe.
