US Embassy in Malawi alerts its Citizens to curtail nonessential travel to Flood affected areas

Lilongwe, Malawi, January 26 (MaraviPost): The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens defer nonessential travel to the affected areas. U.S. citizens residing in Malawi should assess their personal circumstances and relocate as needed.

Please review your personal security and disaster preparedness plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. If possible, secure and maintain on hand a supply of clean water, food, and essential medications sufficient for all family members for at least 48 hours. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.

Malawi ebola screening on 244 Ilala passengers come back negative at Nkhatabay hospital

Nkatabay, Malawi, January 26 (MaraviPost):Ebola results following mandatory screening conducted on 244 people at the Nkhatabay District hospital have come back negative, officials have said.

“Intensive screening for ebola on people who had disembarked from the MV Ilala came out negative for the virus” District Heath Officer for Nkhata Bay Dr. Albert Mkandawire said with a sigh of relief during a press briefing.

Zambia Opposition Demands Election Results Re-verified

Zambia’s main opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to verify all the results of the presidential-by election citing evidence of voter irregularities it said undermines the credibility of the vote.

Canisius Banda, deputy president of the UPND in charge of politics, said the verification has to be done in the presence of all the political parties, stakeholders and the independent election monitoring groups to ensure the winner represents the will of the people.

Malawi Pregnant woman drags church to court for defamation

Ntchisi, January 24: A pregnant woman in Ntchisi has dragged Ntchisi CCAP church to court for allegedly defaming her after members of the church confronted her to enquire if the man responsible for the pregnancy was a member of their church.

The woman, Ruth Maundu, 32, complained that her rights to privacy were infringed and her name defamed due to the enquiry that the church was carrying on her.
