Are calls for MEC chair to resign justified?

Yes,they are justified, MEC chair is directly connected to MCP and transparency and accountability will be compromised.

By Twink Jones Gadama

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) plays a pivotal role in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections in Malawi. As the body responsible for overseeing the electoral process, the integrity and impartiality of its leadership are paramount. In this context, calls for the resignation of MEC Chair Anabel Mtalimanja is not only justified but necessary for the health of Malawi’s democracy. This narrative will explore the reasons behind this call, focusing on her alleged connections to the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), her lack of effective voter sensitization, and the overall implications for electoral integrity.

Anabel Mtalimanja’s appointment as MEC Chair by President Lazarus Chakwera raises immediate concerns about her impartiality. The perception of bias is a significant issue in any electoral process, and her ties to the ruling party cannot be overlooked. Her father, the late John Tembo, was a prominent figure in the MCP, serving as its president for many years. This familial connection raises questions about her ability to remain neutral in her role as the head of the electoral commission. The integrity of the electoral process hinges on the public’s trust in the impartiality of its overseers. If the head of the MEC is perceived as having direct connections to the ruling party, it undermines that trust and raises suspicions about the commission’s ability to conduct fair elections.

Moreover, the MEC under Mtalimanja’s leadership has been criticized for its inadequate efforts to sensitize the public about the importance of voter registration. Voter registration is a fundamental aspect of the electoral process, and it is the responsibility of the MEC to ensure that citizens are informed and motivated to participate in elections. However, reports indicate that the commission has not done enough to reach out to potential voters, particularly in rural areas where access to information is limited. This lack of outreach not only disenfranchises citizens but also skews the electoral process in favor of those who are already politically engaged. A robust democracy requires active participation from all segments of society, and the MEC’s failure to promote voter registration is a significant shortcoming that cannot be ignored.

The first phase of voter registration came to a close on November 3, with alarmingly low numbers sparking concerns of widespread voter apathy in next year’s elections, all unfolding under Anabel Mtalimanja’s supervision.

This underwhelming response has raised questions about civic engagement and the democratic process.

The low registration numbers may indicate a broader issue with voter enthusiasm, potentially influenced by factors such as lack of awareness about the registration process.

Furthermore, there have been allegations of unprofessional conduct among MEC officials, which further tarnishes the commission’s reputation. Reports of rude and dismissive behavior from MEC staff towards citizens seeking assistance with voter registration and other electoral inquiries are alarming. Such conduct not only reflects poorly on the commission but also discourages public engagement in the electoral process. Citizens should feel empowered to participate in democracy, and the MEC’s role is to facilitate that engagement, not hinder it. Calls for Mtalimanja’s resignation are, therefore, a response to a broader pattern of behavior that undermines the integrity of the electoral process.

The implications of Mtalimanja’s continued leadership at the MEC extend beyond her personal connections and the commission’s operational shortcomings. The credibility of the electoral process in Malawi is at stake. If citizens perceive the MEC as biased or ineffective, they may lose faith in the democratic process altogether. This disillusionment can lead to apathy, decreased voter turnout, and ultimately, a weakened democracy. calls for her resignation are not merely a political maneuver; they are a necessary step to restore public confidence in the electoral process and ensure that future elections are conducted fairly and transparently.

In addition to the immediate concerns regarding Mtalimanja’s leadership, the broader context of Malawi’s political landscape must be considered. The country has a history of electoral disputes and allegations of fraud, which have often led to political instability. The opposition’s demand for a change in leadership at the MEC is a reflection of the urgent need for reforms that can help prevent such disputes in the future. By appointing a chairperson who is perceived as neutral and committed to the principles of democracy, the MEC can begin to rebuild trust with the electorate and ensure that future elections are conducted in a manner that reflects the will of the people.

It is therefore concluded that calls for MEC Chair Anabel Mtalimanja to resign are justified and necessary for the health of Malawi’s democracy. Her connections to the ruling MCP, the commission’s inadequate efforts to promote voter registration, and reports of unprofessional conduct among MEC officials all contribute to a perception of bias and ineffectiveness. The integrity of the electoral process is paramount, and the continued leadership of someone with such ties to the ruling party undermines that integrity. For the sake of democracy in Malawi, it is essential that the MEC is led by individuals who are committed to impartiality and the principles of free and fair elections. The calls for Mtalimanja’s resignation are not just a political statement; they are a demand for accountability and a step towards restoring public trust in the electoral process.

DPP Refutes Malicious Allegations on Former President Mutharika’s Health

By Twink Jones Gadama

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has come out strongly to deny and refute allegations made by Maravi Post, an online publication regarding former President Arthur Peter Mutharika’s health.

According to the DPP, the article published by Maravi Post on November 11, 2024, claiming that President Mutharika postponed his voter registration due to illness, is completely false and baseless.

The article alleged that President Mutharika was unable to travel to his home village in Thyolo for voter registration due to health issues and that his physician, Dr. Kingsley Magomero, was rushed to Page House to attend to him.

Shadrick Namalomba, Presidential Spokesperson and DPP National Publicity Secretary, stated that President Mutharika is in excellent health and has been actively engaging in various activities.

In fact, he recently visited two constituencies in Machinga, where he distributed food items to those in need.

Furthermore, President Mutharika is scheduled to attend the opening of the DPP orientation workshop for newly elected NGC members this Friday and the DPP fundraising dinner the following day, Saturday.

This clearly contradicts the allegations made by Maravi Post.

The DPP condemns this malicious writing and urges the writer to verify information from reliable sources, such as the President’s spokesperson, before publishing.

The party also calls upon the writer to retract the article and issue an apology to President Mutharika and the DPP.

This is not the first time the DPP has faced allegations from the MCP and its sympathizers.

Recently, the MCP accused President Mutharika of various wrongdoings, which were strongly denied by the DPP.

The DPP’s strong response to these allegations demonstrates the party’s commitment to setting the record straight and protecting its leaders’ reputation.

As the 2025 polls approach, it is essential for the public to focus on verified sources of information and disregard false and malicious allegations.

FND, MaBLEM optimistic of Chakwera’s leadership economic recovery

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s civil rights groups under the banner Forum for National Development (FND) and Malawi Business Leaders for Economic Movement (MaBLEM) say Malawi is on the right path towards economic recovery.

Amid the ongoing economic challenges faced the two groupings are expressing optimism that the country is on the right path towards economic recovery, growth, and eventual self-sufficiency.

In a joint press statement issued on Monday, November 11, 2024 and signed by FND National Coordinator and MaBLEM chairperson Fryson Chodzi and Robert Mkwezalamba respectively observed that Malawi has made notable strides, despite the significant hurdles in the economy.

They cited from stabilizing the macroeconomic environment to restoring both donor and public confidence, the organisations believe the current administration is positioning the country on a trajectory of long-term growth.

FND and MaBLEM praises President Lazarus Chakwera’s government ongoing commitment to a stable economic environment, underscoring the importance of policy consistency during a time of economic turbulence.

The CSOs particularly pointed to the government’s consistent approach to the Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM) strategy, a policy framework aimed at diversifying Malawi’s economy and creating sustainable growth in sectors that have historically driven the country’s economic potential.

“The current administration has shown policy consistency that has been a vital pillar of Malawi’s economic stability, even in the face of significant challenges.

“This clear direction has inspired confidence from both domestic and international stakeholders, and it serves as the foundation upon which economic recovery can be built”, reads the statement in part.

FND and MaBLEM therefore acknowledged the government’s efforts in addressing critical challenges such as inflation, a fluctuating currency, and rising public debt.

They commended the recent fiscal reforms and efforts to strengthen macroeconomic institutions that have contributed to Malawi’s improved creditworthiness in the eyes of international financial institutions.

While Malawi is navigating through these challenges, the groupings also stressed the importance of continued support from international partners.

The CSOs also observed that the country’s recovery efforts would be significantly enhanced by collaboration with institutions such as the World Bank, bilateral donors, and development agencies, all of whom are crucial in strengthening fiscal discipline and promoting impactful initiatives that directly contribute to Malawi’s economic revitalization.

Reads the statement further, “Support from international partners is crucial for Malawi’s economic recovery.

“We have seen a resounding vote of confidence in Malawi’s reform-oriented approach, and this partnership must be sustained to achieve the desired long-term outcomes”

The groupings therefore called for increased investment in infrastructure projects, rural development, and skills training programs, as these are seen as critical to achieving the country’s broader development goals.

FND and MaBLEM also highlighted the importance of maintaining donor partnerships to drive the effective implementation of these key projects.

The CSOs also pointed out on the need for “leadership predictability” in Malawi’s economic policies.

They referred to the importance of stable and transparent governance, with clear expectations for the business community, investors, and civil society.

Chodzi and Mkwezalamba however emphasized that predictable leadership in both the political and economic spheres is key to providing a conducive environment for private sector investment and overall economic growth.

The statement also reiterated the need for greater economic diversification, which is crucial for reducing the country’s dependency on a few sectors including tobacco.

They lauded identification of Agriculture, Mining, and Tourism (ATM) strategy as areas with the potential to propel Malawi’s economy forward.

The CSOs also highlighted the importance of developing other sectors, such as manufacturing, technology, and renewable energy, to create a robust and resilient economic foundation.

“Diversifying the economy is not an option, but a necessity,” said Mkwezalamba.

“Malawi needs to ensure that its economy is not overly reliant on a single sector, which leaves us vulnerable to global shocks.

“By strengthening other sectors, we can build a more sustainable economic model that benefits all Malawians,” reads the statement further.

Despite the economic challenges Malawi faces—ranging from rising fuel prices to the global impact of climate change—both the CSOs and government representatives are optimistic that the nation is headed in the right direction.

The grouping therefore praised Chakwera’ government’s efforts in building a foundation for future growth.

But they also stressed that continued vigilance, discipline, and collaboration are essential to achieving sustainable development.

“The road to economic recovery is long, but with unwavering commitment, policy consistency, and leadership that inspires confidence, we can establish a stable and prosperous future for Malawi,” concludes the statement.

As Malawi prepares for the future, the call for leadership predictability, fiscal discipline, and economic diversification could not be more urgent.

While the nation has made significant strides, the real challenge lies in ensuring that these positive steps are reinforced and supported by both the government and the private sector, with the backing of international partners.

CSOs’ statement therefore is a hopeful reminder that while the journey may be difficult, Malawi’s economic recovery and self-sufficiency are within reach, provided that the right policies are sustained, leadership remains steadfast, and key sectors of the economy are strengthened and diversified for the benefit of all Malawians.

Malawi is currently in economic challenges including forex fuel and fuel shortages, high cost of living and inflation.

Michael Usi deserts UTM convention to avoid embarrassing defeat

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-For fear of embarrassing defeat, State Vice President Michael Usi has decided said not be party to UTM’s elective convention slated for November 17, 2024 in Mzuzu.

Usi, who is UTM current president told The Nation Online that he does not want to be tainted by the unconstitutional decisions that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has made in the run-up to the conference despite his efforts to advise NEC against the alleged illegal moves.

“As State Vice President, I cannot be involved in a process that is proceeding with serious violations of the party constitution because doing so would make me complicit and if I am seen as complicit in the violation of a party constitution, how can people trust that I will uphold the Constitution of the Republic?,” said Usi.

Some of the violations he cited include moves to change the party constitution without due process, altering the composition of delegates to the national conference and proceeding with the national conference before similar exercises are held at constitutional, district and regional levels where the constitution says delegates to the national conference derive from.

“So, yes, I have not filed my nomination papers because I have no time for unnecessary fights,” he said.

But sources within UTM told this publication that Usi’ decision is based on fear of defeat at the convention as he has no delegates support.

“He has played politics to seek sympathy from the general public to be seen more intelligent while he knows that he could face shameless defeat at the convention.

“Usi always think that is more intelligent in the party. This is he told local media recently that he could not resign from the party citing lack of leadership skills in other party’s members. He has lost the plot”, says the source.

But UTM publicist Felix Njawala asked for more time before he comment on Usi’ decision

Breaking News: Usi Withdraws from UTM Convention, Citing Constitutional Violations

By Twink Jones Gadama

In a shocking turn of events, State Vice President Michael Usi has announced his withdrawal from the United Transformation Movement’s (UTM) elective convention, slated for November 17, 2024, in Mzuzu.

As the current president of UTM, Usi’s decision comes after his efforts to advise the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) against alleged unconstitutional decisions fell on deaf ears.

In an exclusive interview with Nation Online, Usi expressed his concerns about the party’s violation of its own constitution.

“As State Vice President, I cannot be involved in a process that is proceeding with serious violations of the party constitution… If I am seen as complicit in the violation of a party constitution, how can people trust that I will uphold the Constitution of the Republic?” he questioned.

Specifically, Usi cited three key violations: the alteration of the party constitution without due process, changes to the composition of delegates to the national conference, and proceeding with the national conference before similar exercises are held at constitutional, district, and regional levels.

These actions, according to Usi, undermine the very foundation of the party and the country’s democratic principles.

“I have no time for unnecessary fights,” he stated, explaining his decision not to file nomination papers.

This development comes amidst growing tensions within UTM, with some members expressing concerns about the party’s direction and leadership.

Usi’s withdrawal from the convention raises questions about the party’s future and its ability to unite ahead of the convention.

As the November 17 convention approaches, it remains to be seen how UTM will address these constitutional violations and internal conflicts. One thing is certain, however:

Michael Usi’s withdrawal has sent shockwaves through the party, sparking a renewed debate about leadership, accountability, and the rule of law.

The implications of Usi’s decision will be far-reaching, with potential consequences for the party’s reputation and electoral prospects.

As Malawi navigates its complex political landscape, the UTM’s ability to resolve its internal conflicts and adhere to its constitution will be closely watched.

In the words of Usi, “How can people trust that I will uphold the Constitution of the Republic?”

The answer to this question will depend on the actions of UTM’s leadership in the coming days and weeks.

Who is behind Chakwera’s failures? Road to 2025

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera has about ten months to retain power or voted out from State House due to a number of social-economic challenges Malawians are encountering.

Social-economic challenges that are hunting Chakwera including forex, food, drugs shortages in public hospitals, high cost of living, human rights violation and among others.

Chakwera’s failures is attributed choice of individuals to help him to run affairs of the state.

Running affairs of the state is beyond family that one needs capable individuals to strike the balance of meeting citizens expectations.

Chakwera has been a family man, this is the reason he trusted friends, relatives, church members helping him to run the affairs of the state since 2020 when he assumed power.

When the first cabinet was out, the public raised concerns of its compositions: family friends, relatives, church members, but Chakwera stood ground defending it with an assurance that would make Malawians better than previous Democracy Progressive Party (DPP) regime.

But when one makes simple assessment on Chakwera’s cabinet ministers, aids are far much from meeting Malawians expectations.

Many of them have plastic deliverables to blind fold Chakwera with media stunt when all in all nothing to show on the ground.

Despite all the challenges Malawians are facing, Chakwera has managed to put infrastructure development including roads networks.

The country has power through out but businesses are unable to flourish due to poor economic policies that invigorate growth.

But who are individuals that have let Chakwera down in his efforts to serve Malawians better?

Who are these individuals Chakwera must fire immediately?

1. Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda: This is the most powerful government operatives that drive growth in all aspects of development. Chithyola has failed to give insight how the economy should run. Chithyola has no international network to help him to stabilise our forex shortages.

Malawi Finance Minister Chithyola: Must be fired

Despite Chithyola attending many of international meetings within and outside nothing to show on the ground. Unfortunately, Chakwera has been blindfolded with Chithyola media stunt on delivery when the signs are clear that Malawi is bleeding: No forex, no fuel, high cost of living, high inflation etc.

Soft loans through NEEF have failed to reach intended beneficiaries only family, party loyalists are the ones accessing the funds.

Chakwera must fire Chithyola Banda immediately and replace him with capable individual not again a tribes man, a mere party zealot or family friends.

2. Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor Wilson Banda: The central bank is key on monetary policy, inflation and currency stability. Wilson Banda is one the worst and dull RBM governors Malawi have had over the years. Banda does not know what to do.

Banda has been busy blaming his predecessors for the bank’s failure. The bank has been making loses since he was appointed. Banda and his team have been on international workshops just to claim allowances for their pockets.

Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor Banda: Needs replacement

Inflation is high, Malawi Kwacha is not stable, banks don’t have forex. But Chakwera choose to ignore signs of the failed RBM Governor. Mr President fire him, immediately.

3. Homeland Security Minister Ken Zikhale Ng’oma: This is another important ministry that command security and immigration matters.

Zikhale-Ng’oma has been in the media for wrong reasons: Passport mess, unnecessary arrests of individuals whose crime could not be proven in court.

Zikhale-Ng’oma keeps on using Malawi Police Service to intimidate critics to main on power. Malawians are unhappy with Chakwera due to Zikhale-Ng’oma approaches in handling local affairs issues. Despite reports of abuse of power and failure to deliver, Chakwera keeps Zikhale-Ng’oma intact as he Malawi Congress Party (MCP) chief strategist.

Dr. Ken Zikhale Ng'oma
Hoemland Security Minister Dr. Ken Zikhale Ng’oma: Must be sacked

Malawians are currently living in fear because of this man. Turning Malawi into police state.

Mr President, dismiss Zikhale-Ng’oma immediately, he has failed you miserably.

4. Tourism Minister Vera Kamtukule: She is noisy for nothing. She does not respect those she works with. Kamtukule thinks that she is the most intelligent cabinet minister in Chakwera cabinet.

Peace Parks Foundation and Govt pact agreement (Kamtukure signing) needs to be fired

Recently, without sense, she made tour globally selling Malawi amid forex shortages while claiming huge allowances for personal benefits. She was caught in a web wanting to sell Likoma Island.

Mr. President fire, Vera immediately, nothing is working for her. Allow her to concentrate on local politics to become a Member of Parliament (MP).

5. Agriculture Minister Sam Kawale: This is the ministry responsible for food security in the country.

Kawale is Chakwera’s errand boy so much that he unattachable. He replaced Robin Lowe on assurance that Malawi will become food basket again. But nothing is working.

Sam Kawale
Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale: Chakwera’s errand boy

Kawale has failed to guide the ministry to deliver but embroiled into procurement scandals of fertilizers. Malawi is food insecure right now. Malawi is unable to utilize greenbelt initiative to produce food for consumption and commercial. Now, he busy advancing Mega farms notion without proper structures of its implementation.

Kawale is worse than Robin Lowe but because he is Chakwera’s errand boy survives.

But Mr President, fire Kawale immediately, he has failed you.

6. Attorney General (AG) Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda: He is a chief legal government advisor. But his work has been questionable. He has been on number of occasions backing illegal government tenders, procurements. Despite wining some cases in court but he has not helped Chakwera enough.

Nyirenda has been abusing power to victimise others. Chakwera must replace him other capable legal mind.

7. Secretary to The President and Cabinet (SPC) Colleen Zamba: She has been entangled into corruption scandals, abuse of power.

Zamba has used the office to achieve her personal agenda. She has been involved in fuel, fertilizer procurement scandals. Zamba has not been taken to task or probed on these scandals.

Kawale and Zamba

Zamba has contributed to current fuel crisis. She is responsible for this mess.

Mr. President fire her, though you are close friends, she not not serving public interests but personal…
