RSA’s Mpumalanga teacher admits to killing and chopping up girl with albinism for rituals

MPUMALANGA-(MaraviPost)-Mom forced to lock up child with albinism and to beef up security at home for fear he’ll be killed like his sister

The family of a slain 13-yearold girl with albinism are so terrified of muthi killers that they have made their toddler a prisoner in his own home.

On Tuesday, Anna Shabane – the mother of 13-year-old Gabisile – told the Middelburg High Court that the family has had to beef up security at home.

Gabisile was killed after she was abducted from her home in Hlalakahle in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga, last year by a group of men who allegedly wanted her body parts for muti purposes.

Gabisile’s 15-month-old baby cousin, who didn’t have albinism, Nkosikhona Ngwenya, was also abducted with her and later thrown alive off a bridge to drown in a dam near the N4 highway.

One of the four men accused of the double murders, Josiah Thubane, 40, pleaded guilty on all charges including two counts of premeditated murder, two counts of kidnapping,

housebreaking with intent to commit murder and one count of violation of a corpse.

Speaking in aggravation of Thubane’s sentence, Shabane told the high court that her family was living in fear and that her daughter’s killing has destroyed her family.

“I was close to my daughter, and her twin sister Khanyisile has been more shattered by her sister’s passing.

The manner in which she was killed makes me feel that they should have taken me and not her,” she said sobbing.

Shabane told the court that she still has flashbacks of the day she found her daughter’s headless and decomposed body with missing body parts.

“I replay the vivid images in my head over and over again and I keep hoping she would come back. She was young and had a bright future ahead of her,” said the mother.

Shabane also revealed that after security was beefed up by installing CCTV cameras and building a high wall at her house, rumour swelled that she had sold her children.

“I was helped by the municipality after my family was attacked to build a wall around my home and to put in cameras, but my community accused me of selling my children for money to renovate my home,” said the mother.

Prosecutor Ntsika Mpolweni told the court the victim’s report revealed that the mother of the murdered 15-monthold baby, Nompumelelo Ngwenya, was psychologically affected. Mpolweni said when the child was abducted Ngwenya was breastfeeding him.

The prosecutor further said according to social workers, the family lived in fear and was overprotective of the remaining child as they feared he could also be killed.

“The fear is so extreme that the [toddler] cannot even go and play outside with other children and that is as the result of the attack, abduction and killing of two of their children.”

In a statement read out in court, Thubane said that he was part of the plan to kill Gabisile and admitted that he knew she was being abducted to be killed for her body parts.

Thubane also admitted to killing baby Nkosikhona “I admit that on the 27-28 of January 2018 I did unlawfully and intentionally kill the baby by throwing him off the bridge of Zaalklap River. I admit that on the next day in Cullinan, I killed Gabisile Shabane, a 13year-old,” said Thubane.

Thubane, a teacher by profession and father of four, apologised to the family as he was escorted to the holding cells.

Three of his co-accused in the case – Thokozani Msibi, a traditional healer, Brilliant Mkhize and Knowledge Mhlanga – who face the same charges, will appear in court again on May 25 next year.

Mpolweni said that Thubane was not remorseful for the gruesome murder of the two children.

“He only cooperated after he was caught and nothing justified slaughtering Gabisile and chopping off her head, left arm, removing her heart, liver, genital parts that came as proof supported by the postmortem,” said Mpolweni.

Mpolweni further asked the judge to consider the fact that a baby was thrown off a bridge like a stone into a stream of water to die.

“Did he ever ask himself what trauma and pain the Shabane and Ngwenya families have gone through after their actions?” Mpolweni further said the perpetrators deserved no lighter sentence than life imprisonment.

The matter was postponed to Friday for sentencing.

‘‘ I replay vivid images [of headless body] in my head over and over,” told Sowetan.

Former Zimbabwe President Mugabe’s doctor dies

Doctor Kumbirai Mubwandarikwa, who treated prominent liberation fighters including former President Robert Mugabe in colonial jails, has died. He was 78.

His son, Joram, confirmed the death to NewsDay yesterday. (My father) passed away at his Borrowdale home on August 11. He succumbed to cancer,” he said.

Joram said his father, who was among the first blacks to graduate in medicine in the then Rhodesia, will be buried at his farm in Hampshire, Chivhu, on Wednesday.

Mubwandarikwa, who was born in Zvavahera village in Gutu, attended Zvavahera Primary School from 1950 to 1957, Zimuto Secondary School from 1958 to 1959, Inyathi Secondary School from 1960 to 1962 and Goromonzi Secondary School from 1962 to 1963. In 1964, he was accepted by the University of Rhodesia and Nyasaland to study medicine and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBchB) in 1969.

According to Joram, after graduating, his worked at Harare Central Hospital, then Kwekwe Hospital.

In racially segregated Rhodesia, whites often refused to be treated by black doctors, but upon seeing Mubwandarikwa conduct his work, many white Rhodesians became colour blind and sought treatment from him.

Mubwandarikwa also furthered his studies in the United Kingdom and then returned to Zimbabwe shortly after independence, where he worked for the government until he retired in 2006.

He continued working at his private practice until March 2019 when he stopped due to ill health.

Mubwandarikwa is survived by his wife Ndakarwira Magodora, four children — Stella, Tariro, Joram, and Steven — and seven grandchildren.

The Zimbabwe Government has warned foreigners to either stay away from local politics or be ready to face the full wrath of the law.

Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Ambassador Cain Mathema, who indicated that some foreigners — including a well-known global violence architect from Serbia — arrived in the country for MDC-Alliance demonstrations scheduled to start on Friday under the guise of being tourists.

Bizarre! Spaniards paraded alive in coffins in gratitude for defying death

NIEVES, Spain: Six open coffins are paraded around a church and its cemetery as onlookers sing religious songs – but their occupants are all perfectly alive.

This strange ritual takes place on Jul 29 each year in the village of Las Nieves in Galicia in northwestern Spain on the feast day of the local parish’s most important saint, Martha, whose brother Lazarus was raised from the dead when Jesus visited their home according to the Bible’s account.

It is intended as a way for people to thank the saint for having saved themselves or a loved one from death through illness or accident – or to implore her to do so.

Among the devotees this year was Maria Rodriguez, who spent 45 minutes stretched out in a coffin as it was carried by pallbearers, to thank the saint for having saved her dog from cancer.

“It was something spontaneous,” the 69-year-old retiree told AFP when asked why she decided to take part.

“You don’t think, it comes from the heart and soul when you love someone,” added Rodriguez who came from Vigo, the closest big city to the village, for the festival.

Several of those who were paraded in open coffins covered their faces with a fan or hats to hide their faces from the press and shelter themselves from the sun as hundreds of people lined the streets to watch the procession go by.

‘CULT OF LIFE’

Modesto Gomez, a 70-year-old restaurant owner who has attended the festival since he was a child, said there was nothing morbid about it even though he acknowledged its could by “trying” physically and mentally to be carried in an open coffin.

“It’s a cult of life. People who in difficult times make this great sacrifice,” he said.

Las Nieves native Maria del Carmen Gonzalez, who wore a white shroud over her shoulders, watched the procession with her young daughter Aida.

“For me, it’s the best thing,” she said.

Next year she wants relatives to be carried in two coffins – one to thank Saint Martha for saving her husband from pneumonia and another to ask the saint to help her granddaughter with “several problems”.

Gonzalez said that if it was up to her, she would go into a coffin herself but her family fears something could happen to her because of the heat.

The solemn procession, which marks the end of a nine-day fiesta in honour of the saint, passed by stands selling food and beer as well as an inflatable castle.

UNKNOWN ORIGINS

No one is sure where the tradition of parading people in open coffins comes from.

According to a book about the procession published in Las Nieves, the tradition could date back to the medieval crusades.

Nobles who left Galicia to take part in the crusades discovered in France the cut of Saint Martha.

When they returned they thanked the saint for having spared them from death by occupying their own coffins, according to this book.

Another explanation is offered by Carlos Hernandez, a sociologist writing a thesis about the procession.

In the past people would buy their own coffin while they were still alive when they had the means or when a family member was ill, he said

If a seriously ill person survived, they would donate their coffin to the local parish for those who could not afford one. It is not clear though when people started to be paraded in the coffins.

The procession is similar to other rituals in Spain that depict the fight being good and evil, life and death, said Hernandez.

“Its about daring to look at death, look at Evil, so that life wins,” he said.

Another village in Galicia also stages a procession with coffins but in this case they are empty.
