Weird! Malawi’s Mangochi granny killed over witchcraft allegations

Chicken Sacrifice for WitchCraft

By Victoria Picardo

An 87-year-old granny from the area of Senior Chief Nankumba in Mangochi was Monday morning brutally murdered allegedly by irate community members on accusations of witchcraft.

Police in the district have confirmed the incident, identifying the deceased as Alista Makondetsa from Chizula Village in the area of Senior Chief Nankumba in Mangochi.

Mangochi Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sub-Inspector Amina Tepani-Daudi said three suspects have been arrested in relation to the murder while two others are on the run.

Daudi said since 2014 the mother of the suspects had been battling with a neck tumour and that after seeking medical treatment from public hospitals and traditional healers, one of the suspects confided in the others that Makondetsa was behind the ailment.

The police publicist said on Monday morning, the suspects, who are all related, mobilized themselves and went to confront the old woman who denied the allegations before she met her fate.

“Wrangles erupted which resulted into beating the old woman until she fainted,” said Daudi, adding: “The matter was reported to police who rushed to the scene and took her to Monkey Bay Health Centre where she was pronounced dead upon arrival,” explained Daudi.

Daudi said postmortem conducted at the hospital revealed that death was due to severe head injuries and internal bleeding.

The first three suspects who have been arrested immediately are Lifa Wasili, 20, Emily Michael, 20 and Amina lssah, 32, while the other two, Kassim Chinseu, 35 and Michael Chinseu, 42, are on the run, according to Daudi.

Daudi said the suspects are expected to appear before court to answer murder charges contrary to section 209 of the penal code.

Meanwhile, the police have appealed to the general public to report to any nearest police any information on the whereabouts of the two suspects on the run.

She said all the suspects hail from Chizula Village in the area of Senior Chief Nankumba in Mangochi where the deceased also came from.

Egypt’s ousted president Mohammed Morsi dies during trial

Egypt’s former President Mohammed Morsi, who was ousted by the military in 2013, has died after fainting in a courtroom, officials say.

A top figure in the now-banned Islamist movement Muslim Brotherhood, Morsi collapsed in a cage after speaking at a hearing on charges of espionage.

Morsi, who was 67, had been in custody since being ousted following mass protests a year after he took office.

Officials then launched a crackdown on his and Muslim Brotherhood supporters.

Morsi’s hearing in the capital, Cairo, was related to charges of espionage emanating from suspected contacts with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

According to BBC, the late Morsi collapsed moments after addressing the court from a cage some defendants are kept in during sessions, Egypt’s public prosecutor said, adding that a medical report showed no apparent recent injuries on Morsi’s body.

For a long time, there have been concerns over the former leader’s prison conditions. Last October his youngest son, Abdullah, told AP news agency that his father was being held under constant solitary confinement and denied treatment for serious conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Five months earlier, Abdullah said in a Washington Post op-ed that the Egyptian authorities were “doing this on purpose, since they want to see him dead ‘from natural causes’ as soon as possible”.

A death certain to inflame passions

The death of a leader, remembered by many as Egypt’s first democratically elected president, is certain to inflame passions among his supporters and allies in Egypt and beyond. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been quick to describe him as a martyr. Others are certain to do the same.

There has long been concern about the politicised trials which have kept him in prison, as well as his conditions of confinement. Morsi had a history of ill-health.

But last year, a British parliamentary panel reported he was being kept in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day, which they concluded could be classified as torture. They warned this could lead to premature death.

His sudden collapse comes at a time when the United States, reportedly at the request of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, is working to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organisation. The death of one its most senior figures will deepen the anger and anxiety in this global Islamist movement.

Who was Morsi?

Morsi was born in the village of El-Adwah in the Nile Delta province of Sharqiya in 1951. He studied Engineering at Cairo University in the 1970s before moving to the US to complete a PhD.

He was chosen as the Muslim Brotherhood’s presidential candidate for the 2012 election after the movement’s preferred choice was forced to pull out.

Critics complained that, as Egypt’s president, he had failed to deliver during his turbulent year in office, accusing him of allowing Islamists to monopolise the political scene and mishandling the economy.

Public opposition to his government grew and millions of anti-government protesters took to the streets across Egypt to mark the first anniversary of the day he took office, on 30 June 2013.

On the evening of 3 July, the army suspended the constitution and announced the formation of a technocratic interim government ahead of new presidential elections. Morsi, who denounced the announcement as a coup, was taken into custody by the army.

South African TV and film legend Thandi Brewer is dead

South African show runner, screenwriter, film producer, director and script editor Thandi Brewer is dead.

Thandi Brewer often called the “Shonda Rhimes of South Africa” has died after losing her third battle against cancer.

She also launched many careers in script-writing, directing and acting. She was also the founder and first chairperson of the influential and growing Writer’s Guild of South Africa (WGSA).

Harriet Meier, chairperson of the WGSA, told Channel24 on Monday: “[Thandi Brewer] passed away this morning at around 02:15 after a long battle with cancer. She was in tremendous pain over the last year, but fought and was our pillar of strength until the end”.

“Thandi touched so many lives during her time with us, not only as an extremely talented writer, producer, director, teacher and mentor, but also as a friend. Her love embraced all who met her, and she will be greatly missed by many, many people.”

“While we desperately miss her, we will also celebrate her life and legacy by continuing her work and her vision. Thandi leaves behind her daughter Cody and an extended family of wordsmiths throughout the world.”

Beyond TV and film, she was also a writer and director of numerous stage productions over many years.

In 2018 on Facebook Thandi wrote: “I am in the midst of the third round with cancer.”

“The breast cancer metamorphosed into bone cancer attacking the back. Remember the back pain I used to moan about? That wasn’t just ‘writers back’. It was cancer, which obviously loves me and wants to live with me on a permanent basis. I’ve no idea how those actresses manage to look palely interesting when playing someone with cancer because I look like hell.”

The Friends of Thandi Brewer (FTB) Facebook group shared on Wednesday that she died “at home on her beloved Smoke, with her daughter by her side, her river and her dogs – all she wanted. Thank you so very much to all of you who supported Thandi in her journey with her illness”.

Thandi was responsible for the film screenplays of movies like Story of an African Farm with Richard E. Grant, De Gerrie for Hugh Masekela and The Chemo Club, which marked her directorial debut.

Some of the shows she created for the SABC or steered as showrunner range from Dynamite Diepkloof Dudes, 37 Honey Street, End Game, Keeping Score to Usindiso, Sticks and Stones and many more.

As a script editor, she wrote and improved text from shows from SABC1, SABC2, to e.tv and M-Net, as well as worked on scripts for international films and more than 24 documentaries.

In March the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) honoured her at the 13th South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) with a special industry achievement award.

The outpouring on Wednesday following news of Thandi’s death was swift with Thabang Moleya, co-founder of Seriti Films and director of the film Happiness in a Four Letter Word, saying “A true leader and a legend. Thandi Brewer. Rest in power”.

“She was someone who would believe in you and challenge you to push yourself. I salute her and the impact she has had on the industry and the people whose lives she touched.”
