Embarrassing; Livingstonia Synod tussles with chiefs over Chakwera and Chilima speeches’ cut at Paramount Chikulamayembe’s burial

Reverend Nyodo

Tension and tempers ran high at the burial ceremony of Themba la Mathemba Chikulamayembe .

The service that was being broadcast live on MBC radio and television revealed the growing tension between chiefs and the clergy.

The service revealed two camps being present that which supported President Peter Mutharika and oppressed the leader of opposition and Vice President of Republic of Malawi Dr Saulos Chilima.

This camp lead by Local Government Minister Kondwani Nakhumwa failed to respect the presences of the Vice president.

In his speech representing the state president, the local Government minister failed to acknowledge the presence of the Vice president as he omitted the vice presidents name in list of those salutation.

After his speech the master of ceremonies ordered that the program be handed over to the clergy denying the vice president and leader of opposition to have opportunity to give last respect to the fallen the chief.

In return the clergy represented by the General Secretary of  church of Central African Presbyterian (CCAP) Livingstonia Synod, Reverend Levi Nyondo, described the actions of the government as an anomaly and therefore ordered that things being changed.

He then ordered that before the church service began that the Vice president of the Republic of Malawi and the leader of opposition Lazarus Chakwera both be given opportunity to speak.

This was welcomed by applause by mourners , however this was short lived.   as chiefs stormed over where Reverend Nyondo was speaking to take the mic away from him.

The chiefs then stated that it’s against the laws of Malawi for anyone to speak after the president. They then demanded the church service to  begin .

This didn’t go well with Nyondo who then demanded that Government must stay away from church business.

“All stakeholders must be represented. It is only right that the leader of opposition and the vice president be given an opportunity to mourn the chief. It is high time that Government stops intervening in church business.

“It’s important that when producing programs for funerals that both the state and the church work together. What has happened today must never occur again”, echoed Nyondo.

Nyondo words were applauded by the crowd as most felt that funeral services must not be programmed to favour one side but rather to accommodate all stakeholders.

At the service we saw the Vice President sitting amongst the crowd away from his rightful place.

Therefore it was noted  further that the government side oppressing the two key leaders by omitting their names in those to lead as they escorted Themba la mathemba Chikulamayembe to his final resting place.

No Catholic no gay: Pope tells LGBTQ nuns, priests to cease or leave

VATICAN-(MaraviPost)-In a new book, Pope Francis has written that gay people should not join the Catholic clergy because “there’s no room for that kind of affection” in the religious life of the world’s largest church.

“The issue of homosexuality is a very serious issue that must be adequately discerned from the beginning with the candidates,” Francis wrote in his book titled “The Strength of a Vocation,” referring to potential priests, The Guardian reported  on Saturday.

Catholic Church Poised to Correct ‘Flaws’ in Historic Lord’s Prayer

“In our societies it even seems that homosexuality is fashionable and that mentality, in some way, also influences the life of the church,” he wrote in his book, released on Saturday in Italy.

“This is something I am concerned about, because perhaps at one time it did not receive much attention,” he states, referring to women who want to enter religious communities to become nuns. All priests, nuns and monks are required to take vows of celibacy in the Catholic Church, agreeing to a complete abstinence of any form of sexual activity.

In 2005, the Catholic church banned homosexuality in the clergy, claiming that the practice is a sin.

“It can happen that at the time perhaps they didn’t exhibit [that tendency], but later on it comes out,” Francis suggested.

“In consecrated and priestly life, there’s no room for that kind of affection. Therefore, the church recommends that people with that kind of ingrained tendency should not be accepted into the ministry or consecrated life,” he said.

New study reveals 3,677 German Catholic Church sex abuse cases over decades

Over the past few months, Pope Francis has been the center of a sexual abuse scandal over a letter by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the former apostolic nuncio to the United States (2011-2016) and ex-secretary-general of the Governorate of Vatican City State (2006-2011).

In his August 30, 2018, testimony, Vigano accused the pope and other top-level prelates of the Catholic Church of covering up sexual abuse of priests and seminarians by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who resigned from the College of Cardinals on July 28, 2018, over sexual harassment allegations.

According to Vigano, he informed Pope Francis about McCarrick’s sexual misconduct on June 23, 2013, but the pope did not take any action to address the issue resulting in accusations of complicity in the abuse on the part of the Pope and the church hierarchy.

President Mutharika face to face with meet Chilima at Chief Chikulamayembe burial

President Peter Mutharika and his estranged Vice-President Saulos Chilima, political allies-turned-foes, are set to meet face-to-face at the funeral service of Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe at Bolero in Rumphi today.

This will be the first time the two will make a public appearance at the same function together since June this year when Chilima announced his ambition to challenge Mutharika in the presidential race in the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections.

On Monday, the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) issued two statements announcing the funeral programme for the fallen Tumbuka Paramount Chief who died on Thursday at Mzuzu Central Hospital after succumbing to low blood pressure.

In the initial statement signed by Principal Secretary (Administration) in the OPC, Cliff Chiunda, the office said Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa would represent the President at the funeral service at Chilongozgi Village in Bolero, Rumphi.

The statement added that Mutharika had directed that the late Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe, born Walter John Hardy Gondwe, “be accorded a burial with military honours”.

In the second statement issued last evening classified as ‘Revised’ and signed by Chief Secretary to the Government Lloyd Muhara, OPC said the funeral service would start at 1pm and that the President would attend.

“The late Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe will be buried with military honours and His Excellency the President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, will be in attendance.”reads the statement.

On the other hand, the Office of the Vice-President last evening also confirmed that Chilima would attend the funeral ceremony.

“Yes, it’s true that the Vice-President is set to attend the funeral service of the late Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe in Rumphi tomorrow today,” said an official in the Office of the Vice-President.

Besides, providing an opportunity for the country’s First and Second citizens to meet face-to-face, the funeral ceremony could be a potential political posturing arena, a fear that prompted CCAP Livingstonia Synod general secretary the Reverend Levi Nyondo yesterday to warn politicians against donning party colours.

During a church service in Mzuzu to see off the chief’s body, he said: “Wearing of political colours brings confusion. We will not allow any person to bring political colours. Anyone who dares will be chased away.”

Nyondo’s sentiments come against a background of political posturing at recent Gonapamuhanya cultural festivals where rival political parties have clashed.

Kamwendo was shot dead at his home in Empangeni, Republic of South Africa (RSA) in May this year.

Two men, including a lecturer at the same institution, were arrested for his murder at the weekend. Kamwendo’s colleague, who may not be named until he has appeared in court and pleaded, allegedly hired a hitman for R10 000 to kill the professor because he had uncovered a fraudulent PhD syndicate in the university that involved three members of the academic staff.

“The professor was fighting against this corruption. There is a lot of people who have received PhDs through fraud,” said the source.

“They arrested the men late  last week It was a joint operation with the Empangeni tracing team, a detective from Sandton and Bheki Thusi, a private investigator from KwaZulu-Natal,” said the source.

“The professor ended up opening a case of intimidation against him.”

Kamwendo,  who was 53, was originally from Malawi and had been at the university since 2016.

Police say he was shot and killed in the driveway of his home. He suffered multiple fatal shots to his upper body.

Col Thembeka Mbhele confirmed that two men were arrested last week.

“On Thursday, November 29 2018, detectives arrested two suspects aged 50 years for murder. They will appear tomorrow [today] in the Empangeni magistrate’s court,” Mbhele said.
