Three women conducting mining activities at Nathenje river bank in Lilongwe have died after being trapped in mining holes when land collapsed and fell on them in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Chadza in Lilongwe.

Police have identified the deceased as 26 year old Rosemary Chimbereko and 43 year old Mtamandika Chipira both of Mazinga village, and Rofina Jackson aged 36 of Kachikho village, all form T/A Chadza in Lilongwe.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula said this on Saturday while in the company of their friends, the deceased went to Nathenje river bank to mine precious stones (Lodrite) when the disaster struck.

Malawi President Mutharika honours fallen heroes ahead of Nkhata Bay Jetty launch

President Mutharika and the First Lady laid the wreath before officially opening the multi million kwacha Nkhata Bay Jetty in the district. The Jetty is one of the main projects in the marine sector. Major transformations are also expected in all of the country’s ports such as Chilumba in Karonga, Monkey Bay in Mangochi, Chipoka in Salima and Likoma.

According to MBC, the gesture was highly commended by the members of the clergy and traditional leaders. Senior Chief Mkumbira said President Mutharika has demonstrated that he values and respects the history of the country as manifested in his development agenda.

“As you know a lot of our relatives lost their lives during the 1959 massacre and this is a great honour to the people of Nkhata Bay and the rest of the country,” said Senior Chief Mkumbira.

The sentiments were echoed by General Secretary for the Clergy Association in NkhataBay, Bishop David Mkandawire who described the gesture as a sence of belonging.

“The faith community is equally overwhelmed, we organise yearly events to honour our heroes and the President has motivated us,” noted Bishop Mkandawire.

The permanent Nkhata Bay jetty replaces the old floating one which sunk due to strong Mwera winds in 2016; President Mutharika said the development is part of the National Transport Master Plan set to enhance the transport sector in the country.

The Malawi leader said through the plan, major rehabilitations will take shape in all the ports in the country. Commenting on the Jetty, Senior Chief Mkumbira could not hide his excitement for the development.

Construction experts say the jetty is constructed at a solid base set to live for the next 50 years.

Bizarre: RSA man buried with beer and money

A 27-year-old South African man has reportedly been sent off in a bizarre way in which his friends and relatives Bizarre: were witnessed pouring beer in his grave as well as tossing money, cellphones, clothes and other expensive things.

This bizarre way of sending off has recently occurred on Saturday in Orange Farm, south of Joburg in the rainbow country of South Africa.

According to DailySun , Paulos Amade had lived a lavish lifestyle throughout all his life and because of that, his friends and relatives organized themselves to toss expensive things including beer into his grave.

Report adds that there was singing and dancing, drinking and crazy displays of riches as his friends celebrated his short life at Olifantsvlei cemetery in the south of Joburg.

His death came after he allegedly consumed beer laced with rat poison over love issues. He survived by three children.

Jeannette Amade, Paulos’ sister, told Daily Sun they knew Paulos as a man of style, so they let his friends celebrate him the way they wanted.

“We could not oppose the manner they wanted to celebrate him. When they poured beer and put money and clothes into the grave, we understood that it was the same way they did things when he was still alive,” she said.

However, the area’s cultural expert said what the young men had done was pure disrespect of culture.
“This undermines our culture. It is a meaningless publicity stunt created by people who seek fame.

“There is nothing respectful about people pouring beer into a dead person’s final resting place. If they wanted to celebrate him, they should have done it while he was still alive,” said Refiloe Wa Ga Khunou, a cultural expert.
