Lilongwe robber shot dead in gunfire exchange; stolen vehicle recovered

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Barely a few minutes after a report of the stolen vehicle, Police in Lilongwe managed to recover the vehicle in a dramatic exchange of fire with the robbers.

According to Nolliettie Chihana Chimala, Central Region Public Relations Officer the incident happened on Wednesday afternoon when the Police received a call that unknown two thugs have robbed off a car, Toyota Sienta registration number LL 8511 at Four Seasons in Area 12.

The car belongs to Albon Mataula, 31 years from Katimbiri village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Kanyenda in Nkhotakota district.

Chimala told The Maravi Post that upon the receipt of the information, the Anti-motor Vehicle Theft Unit at Central Region Police Headquarters maneuvered strategically to round up the robbers who had taken a route heading for Biwi triangle using Chidzanja road.

They were intercepted head-on along the same Chidzanja road.

The police publicist added that upon the interception, the robbers who were armed with unidentified short guns started firing at the Police but the police never retreated.

As a result, there was a fierce exchange of fire between the law enforcers and the robbers.

“Fearing that they were about to be defeated, the robbers diverted to a nearby dust road in an effort to escape but the police were close after them. Due to high speeding, the thugs lost control of the vehicle and thereafter run into a brick fence. As fires were being exchanged, one robber was shot dead while the other one managed to escape.

“The robbers are yet to be identified but the stolen vehicle got recovered. The body of the robber who was shot dead is being kept at Kamuzu Central Hospital mortuary,” explains Chihana.

She adds; “Police are therefore appealing to any person with information which might lead to the identification and arrest of the robber to come forward. Police will treat such information with prudence and professionalism”.

Mangochi businessman Yiannakis Killed, Robbed Off MK14 Million

A 52-year-old business man has been killed and also robbed off K14 million cash by unknown criminals at his residence in Mangochi.

The district’s police deputy spokesperson Amina Daudi identified the deceased as Harry Yiannakis who met his fate on Tuesday May 15, this year.

According to Daudi, five unknown thugs armed with different weapons stormed the house of Yiannikis who owns Tambala Estate in the district.

“After entering inside, the thugs demanded to have cash while assaulting the deceased. Later they went away with MK14 million after they had hacked Mr. Yiannakis who was found with deep machete cuts all over his body, said Daudi.

The businessman was rushed to Mangochi District Hospital where he died upon arrival.

Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation to apprehend the culprits while calling upon the general public to help with any information that can lead to the suspect’s arrest.

Thyolo-Bvumbwe teenager commits suicide

An 18-year old boy in Bvumbwe, Thyolo has committed suicide by hanging himself on the rafters of his house.

Deputy spokesperson of Limbe police, Widson Nhlane, has confirmed the sad development saying the boy, Yamikani Bakuli was found hanging on the rafters of his house after he went missing.

According to Nhlane the deceased uncle, Willard Chifufuteni, said on 10 May this year Yamikani went missing after saying that he was going to Limbe market to look for a job.

Chifufuteni further said that their family was surprised on 13 May during day time, when Yamikani was found hanging on the rafters of his house.

“On 13 May we received a report that a boy in Bvumbwe Township has committed suicide and we rushed to the scene and the dead body was taken to Bvumbwe health centre where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

“Postmorten results showed that he died due to suffocation but the motives behind the suicide is not known up to date,” Nhlane said.

Yamikani Bakuli hailed from Sakoma village in Traditional Authority Bvumbwe in Thyolo district.

Meanwhile police is reminding members of the public that if the have any problem, it’s better to share with someone else in the neighborhood or report at Victim support unit for a possible solution other than committing suicide.

South Africa Based Malawian Man Commits Suicide while in Police Cell

SANDTON-(MaraviOost)-A Malawian man who was arrested in South Africa for murdering his wife after a quarrel has reportedly committed suicide while in prison cell.

A report identifies the Man as Samson Chodothi Nyathi who killed his wife, Annie Nkhata on Sunday morning in Sandton, South Africa.

According to Nyathi’s in-law (name withheld), Nyathi picked up a quarrel with his wife on Sunday.

“In the midst of quarreling, Nyathi withdrew a metal rod and used it to hit his wife in the head. He then fled from the scene and later on, the wife breathed her last,” said the in-law.

The relatives later reported the matter to sandton police and after a search, the culprit was apprehended.

Nyathi was supposed to appear in court on Tuesday for murder charges before he committed suicide while in police custody, according to the in-law.

“While in police custody on Monday, Nyathi is said to have been left alone in cell as his fellow inmates were appearing before court. He is believed to have had a string in his possession which he used to hang himself with, “added the source.

Meanwhile, reports say all the dead bodies are being kept at Hillbrow Mortuary in Johannesburg CBD.

The deceased Nyathi hailed from Bohelo in Lunjika area in Mzimba district while Annie Nkhata hailed from Nkhatabay district.

President Peter Mutharika leads Malawians in burying soccer legend Jack Chamangwanya

President Peter Mutharika on Tuesday led Malawians in mourning and burying soccer legend Jack Chamangwana who died earlier hours of Monday Malawi Queens Hospital in Blantyre.

On Monday, the South Africa football team giant, Kaizer Chiefs also joined football lovers in the country in mourning Chamangwana

On its Tweets, #Amakhosi4Life”, the team feels disheartening for the death of Chamangwana who contributed heavily to Malawi’s football.

The late Jack Chamangwana wore the number 5 jersey for Malawi’s local Premier League team Mighty Wanderers with distinction and wore the same for the Malawi National team known as the Flames.

During his time he saw many successes with his local club competing against Bata Bullets legend Kinnah Phiri. As premier defender the Malawi National Flames saw much success in the East African Challenge cup.

He continued to coach both the Malawi National team and also his local club Mighty Wanderers.

About Chamangwana in Malawi football;

Jack (popularly known as Africa) is the second Flames most capped player with 133 appearances. Amazingly he started in all the matches and was never a substitute.

He made his debut in a friendly match against Kenya on 10 July 1975 in Lilongwe as an 18 year old. Flames won this game 3-1 with legend Kinna Phiri getting a brace while Isaac Muhura scored the other goal.

On that day, under Brazilian coach Wander Moreira, the Flames lined up as follows:

Frank Mlotcha,Steven Phiri, Bosco Munthali, Robert Banda, Jack Chamangwana, Montfort Pemba, Spy Msiska, Kinna Phiri, Yasin Osman, Patrick Chikafa and Isaac Muhura.

Jack was eventually substituted and replace by Elvin Mwafulirwa. That same year Jack travelled with the team to Zambia as Malawi made its debut appearance at the East and Central Africa Senior Challenge Cup (ECASCC). The Flames reached the final and lost 2-1 on penalties to Kenya after drawing 2-2 in extra time. He featured in Flames’ 7 games that year.

In the next two years, Jack played in all the 28 games that took place and even scored his first ever goal in a 2-0 win over Botswana in a friendly match away in Gaborone in 1977. He also played in all the matches played in 1980 (13) and 1982 (7). On 3rd October 1982, in an African Cup of Nations Qualifier against Zimbabwe in Harare, Jack made his 100th appearance as Malawi won 2-0.

Two years later, in Malawi’s first ever appearance at the African Cup of Nations finals in Bouake, Ivory Coast on 08 April 1984, Jack overtook Kinna Phiri as the most capped player after featuring in a 2all draw against Nigeria . This was his 118th match and his record as Flames most capped played lasted for seven years before being broken by Young Chimodzi in 1991.

Jack played under seven coaches during his eleven years with the Flames starting with Brazilian Wander Moreira, followed by caretaker for 1 game Hydri Kondwani, Englishmen George Curtis and Ted Powell. This was then followed by two Malawians, caretaker Alex Masanjala and Henry Moyo while his last coach was Danny McLennan from Scotland.

Jack is only player to have appeared in four final matches beginning with the ECASCC final in Lusaka in 1975 which Malawi lost to Kenya then the 1978 final which Malawi won after being Zambia 3-2. He was also part of the squad that retained the ECASS in 1979 beating Kenya 3-2 with goals from Bannet Gondwe, Stock Dandies and Collins Thewe.

In 1984 Jack appeared in his fourth ECAS Final in Kampala, Uganda, but ended up with a Silver medal as Malawi lost 3-0 to Zambia.

Jack played his last match for the Flames on 16th April 1985 in Maputo against Mozambique in an African Cup of Nations 2nd leg qualifier which ended 1all on aggregate and Malawi lost 6-5 on penalties. This how the Flames lined up on Chamangwanas’s last match:

John Dzimbiri, Harry Waya, Ruben Malola, Collins Thewe, Jack Chamangwana, Young Chimodzi, Lawrence Waya, Jonathan Billie, Frank Sinalo, Peterkins Kayira and Clifton Msiya. Dickson Mbetewa and Holman Malunga came on as subs for Malola and Jack.

In 1986 Jack left for South Africa where he played for giants Kaizer Chiefs. He coached Chiefs in 1988 before being replaced by Jeff Butler whom he replaced again in 1989. He also coached Young Africans of Tanzania in 2006.

Jack was Flames coach in 1998 for 13 games with a record of 1 win 6 draws and 6 loses. He then served as FAM technical director between 2009 and 2013. He was part of the Flames technical team at the 2010 Afcon . Jack and then assiant coach Young Chimodzi are the only ones who went to Afcon twice as a player in 1984 and an officia in 2010.

Between 2014 and 2015 he served as Flames assistance coach under Young Chimodzi. He is now technical director for Befoward Wanderers since 2016.

Thugs kill govt top official in Tanzania

UNKNOWN assailants have brutally killed a government leader at Mwadui area in Rukwa on Tuesday night, sending chills up the spines of residents in the area and the region at large.

It was at around 11pm on Tuesday when armed assailants gunned down Mwadui Ward Executive Officer (WEO) Benedicto Chapewa, who was drinking at his own bar, before mutilating his body with machetes.

The ward is located along Lake Rukwa in Sumbawanga District in Rukwa region. Rukwa Regional Police Commander (RPC), George Kyando spoke to the ‘Daily News’, confirming the horrific and tragic incident that has brought fear to residents in the ward.

According to the regional police boss, Rukwa Regional Crime Officer (RCO) who was only identified as Mr N. Kitinkwi and his team were working round the clock searching for the killers, who were, until yesterday evening, at large.

The RPC who admitted having scanty details on the incident said: “As I speak to you now, the RCO and team are there investigating this crime against humanity. I will provide you with details when he returns from the scene.”

However, the regional police commissioner gave some details on the heinous crime, saying on the material day before Mr Chapewa was brutally killed, he was drinking with his friends at his own bar when armed individuals emerged, gunning him down.

He said the assailants who also had machetes decapitated Mr Chapewa’s body before they vanished under the cover of darkness. Questions still lingered in the minds of the police and the general public in the area and in the region at large, considering the fact that the assailants did not harm or rob other patrons nor did they steal money from the counter of the bar.

“However, it is not established so far if the suspects were either gangsters or robbers because after storming the bar they went straight to Chapewa and shot him with a single bullet and later sliced him into pieces with machetes before the horrified patrons who were threatened with dire consequences if they attempted to run or raise the alarm.

Thyolo man commits suicide over a terminated love affair

A 29 year old man identified as Rodrick Chapita has killed himself by drinking poison after his girl friend terminated their relationship in Bvumbwe township

According to the deceased’s brother, Rodrick was in a love affair with a certain lady in their area. Due to some problems, the lady terminated the relationship.

Limbe Police station spokesperson Patrick Mussa told the Maravi Post that the incident did not please the deceased who later took pesticide called ” Dudu” in the presence of his sister and after some minutes he collapsed.

Mussa added that the police officers as well as medical personnel visited the scene and postmortem results showed that death was due to poisoning.

The deceased hailed from Gunde village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Bvumbwe in Thyolo district.

Meanwhile police wishes to tell members of the public to seek advice from the police, elders, religious leaders and traditional leaders whenever they have disagreements in their areas.

Falling glasses claim one life, injure two in Blantyre

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Hassan Misesa whose full particulars are not yet known died Friday after glasses fell on him whilst offloading them from a container at Glass bank Company premises in Maselema township.

Spokesperson of Limbe police, Sergeant Wildson Nhlane said the incident happened when the people where on duty offloading the glasses from a container.

Nhlane said when three where in process of offloading them suddenly the glasses fell on them which made the victims sustain injuries due to the impact of the glasses.

He further said when the two where taken to hospital the deceased was pronounced dead upon arrival while the other two victims where treated and now are out patients.

“After the incident happened the three where rushed to hospital and where treated but the deceased was pronounced dead upon the arrival which was attributed to severe loss of blood during the time of the accident,” Nhlane said.

Meanwhile the police is advising the general public to be extra careful when offloading goods to avoid reoccurrences of such incidents.

The Victims Patrick Harry aged 35 comes from Namatheka village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Chikowi and Allan Faki hails from Moto village, T.A Mlumbe, both from Zomba district.

17 year-old girl electrocuted in Lilongwe

A 17 year old girl identified as Miriam Amisi in Kawale has died due to electric shock she got from ESCOM electric wire.

Lilongwe police spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula in an interview said Kawale police Unit received information from 70 year M’balaka Mkwanda that his in-law (the deceased) has died due to electric shock.

“The deceased was a standard 5 leaner at Mchesi Primary school and on Sunday she was washing clothes and she took the used water to pour behind the house,” explained Dandaula.

He further said after pouring the water she accidentally came into contact with a loose wire on her neck which was hanging from ESCOM pole.

The deceased was electrocuted and was taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Postmortem was conducted and death was due to electric shock.

Therefore police is advising members of the general public to report to ESCOM when they encounter a loose wire in their compounds.

Dead body found floating in Lilongwe River

A body of unidentified man was found floating in Lilongwe river in the early hours of Tuesday April 23, 2018.

A fisherman identified as Ishmael James, who resides at Chinsapo was the one who found the unknown dead body in the river and he reported the incident to the police.

Speaking in an interview, Lilongwe police spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula confirmed of the incident.

“Criminal investigation department (CID) team and medical personnel visited the scene but could not determine the cause of death because the dead body was in decomposed state,” said Dandaula.

The remains were buried there and enquiries are underway to trace relatives of the deceased.
