LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has asked the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) to investigate the leaked conversation between the Minister of Health Jappie Mhango and the Minister of Information
Mark Botomani concerning the money the ministerial committee has been pocketing.
According to the leaked conversation, it was revealed that the committee members that was instituted by President Peter Mutharika to lead in the fight against further spread of COVID-19 in the country have been pocketing “Risk Tokens” of MK450,000.00 and MK300, 000.00 for every press briefing they attended.
In a letter written to the Director General of ACB Mr. R. Matemba, CDEDI’s Acting Executive Director has disclosed that Botomani reportedly refuted the claims in previous interview with Times Television that him and other member of committee have been receiving money for the work they were doing.
CDEDI also expressed dismay on how government responded to the petition of healthy workers to have their risk allowances raised.
Reports revealed that the risk allowances for the health workers were raised from MK1,800.00 to MK25,000.00 per month while the MP’s are getting huge some of money which demonstrate lack of transparency and accountability in handling public funds by the committee members.
CDEDI has consequently petitioned ACB to act with urgency on the matter and investigate the rest of the committee members on grounds of possible abuse of public funds meant for COVID-19 fight.
