BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Citizens for Credible Elections (CfCE) has reaffirmed its commitment to holding peaceful nationwide demonstrations until the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) responds to public demands for transparency and accountability.
Despite submitting petitions to MEC and District Commissioners in Blantyre, Mzuzu, and Mangochi, CfCE has received no official response, which they view as a blatant disregard for the voice of Malawian citizens.
CfCE has expressed deep concern over MEC’s failure to address the growing public demand for transparency and accountability, citing the erosion of public trust in MEC’s ability to manage elections with integrity.
The organization has called for an independent audit of MEC’s electoral systems and procedures, as well as the resignation of MEC Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja and Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi.
The group has also taken issue with MEC’s continued insistence on implementing the electronic voting system technology without allowing independent verification, which has been met with widespread public skepticism.
CfCE believes that public confidence can only be restored through transparent and accountable electoral processes.
As CfCE continues to mobilize citizens across the country to peacefully protest, they have made it clear that they will not support or participate in any upcoming electoral processes while the current climate of anxiety and mistrust persists.
The upcoming protests are expected to draw attention to the need for electoral reform and transparency in Malawi’s democratic institutions.
