By Pempho Kantayeni

LILONGWE-(MANA)-President Lazarus Chakwera has condemned recent violent acts towards individuals who planned to demonstrate peacefully and has called upon the the police to investigate the matter and bring perpetrators to book.

On Wednesday a group of civil servants, who planned a march to present a petition to Parliament on salary rise, were attacked by some panga welding thugs.

A press statement issued Thursday signed by Presidential Press Secretary,  Anthony Kasunda, says violence has no place in a civilised society.

“Those who seek to use violence to intimidate or disrupt democratic processes must be held accountable, those using political participation or demonstrations as an excuse to incite violence must not be allowed to tarnish the country’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa,” reads the statement in part.

President Chakwera has assured Malawians that his government will take all necessary measures to hold those responsible for the disturbance accountable.
