Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president, Dr Lazarus Chakwera has assured its supporters across the nation and abroad of fears lingering them on the party’s risks of losing its Lilongwe Headquarters due to rental arrears tune to MK265 million it owes to Lilongwe City Council (LCC) since 2001 saying necessary arrangements are made to settle the matter amicably.
The MCP President told the news conference in Lilongwe on Thursdays when he was sharing the party’s thoughts on issues affecting Malawians which among other key ones including the state of national disaster, progress on cash gate cases in court, the fate of Albinos, rapes of internal security and the move by government to sell Malawi Saving Bank (MSB).
Dr Chakwera said the party could not lose the building due to such a little anomaly saying party gurus are banging heads together to resolve the matter such its supporters must remained calm.
“This is a simple matter and I’m surprised seeing our supporters panic. They must not be afraid with the snake that can’t bite (wosawopa njoka luzu abale anga). We have a powerful team including secretary general, treasure general, administrative secretary and party supporters who can’t sit and watching building going”, assures Chakwera who was franked by party gurus including Njomvuyalema, Chidaya among others.
On the national disaster, Dr Chakwera called government through ministry of agriculture to intensify irrigation farmers in affected areas by floods as there were signs of rooming hunger hence the appeal.
On fate of Albinos in the country, MCP President said all Malawians have responsibility to protect their fellow human beings from criminals hence calling government again to put measures in addressing the problem which was threatening the welfare of Albinos in the country.
Responding on the current state of cash gate cases, Dr Chakwera lamented on biased persecution of individuals deemed to be enemies of the current DPP regime which he said was unhealthy on rules of natural justice which states that no one is above the law.
On the plans to sell Malawi Saving Bank (MSB) by government, Joseph Njomvuyalema who speaks for the party’s financial matters in Malawi Parliament said nobody including the cabinet could just decide alone on matter without consulting other arms of government.
“Malawi Parliament saw it important to intervene on the matter as it represents the people. Therefore, the cabinet including the President can’t just wake up one morning saying wants to sell people assert without thorough consultations. This is why we came in for rescuing Malawians from such an abuse”, said Njovuyalema.
Njovuyalema said if government won’t listen to the calls on the matter, parliament has powers to summon the president to answers questions regarding to it in the best interest of Malawians not few individuals.
“If they insist to sell the the bank as propased then parliament will do its needful job on the matter as this is the public’ taxes which needs not be used for selfish gains in the name of saving money but Malawians interest”, challenges Njovuyalema.
