LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera on Saturday, April 26, 2025 attended a Requiem Mass for His Holiness Pope Francis at Maula Cathedral in the capital Lilongwe.
Accompanied by First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera, the Malawi leader was welcomed on arrival by Archbishop George Desmond Tambala, Archbishop of Lilongwe Diocese and several other top government officials.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born on 17th December, 1936 and died on 21st April 2025.
He was the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from 2013 until his death in 2025.
He was the first Jesuit pope, the first Latin American.
Pope Francis will be laid to rest today in a funeral expected to gather leaders from around the world.
The ceremony will take place in St. Peter’s Square, Rome, and will be led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re. Following the funeral, a conclave of 135 cardinals will meet to elect the next pope.
