LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera on Saturday, July 5, 2025 lead a National Service of Worship at the Bingu International Convention Centre in the capital Lilongwe to mark the country’s 61st independence anniversary.
Malawi became independent from British rule on July 6, 1964, under its first President, Ngwazi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
President Chakwera is accompanied by government officials, chiefs, clergy, business leaders, and citizens.
The celebrations will wrap up on Sunday at Bingu National Stadium with military parades, a friendly football match between Malawi’s Flames and Botswana’s Zebras, and cultural dances, attended by both President Chakwera and Botswana’s President Duma Gedion Boko.
This year’s theme is ‘Restoring Broken Foundation, Taking Malawi Forward.’
