BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera has officially renamed the newly constructed stadium in Mwanza to Joyce Chitsulo Stadium, in memory of the late Deputy Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture.
The stadium, which was commissioned on September 4, 2025, has a seating capacity of between 7,000 and 10,000 spectators.
The naming ceremony was attended by Chitsulo’s family, including her daughter Maureen, who is the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate for Mwanza West in the upcoming general elections.
Maureen praised President Chakwera’s leadership during the ceremony.
President Chakwera described the late Joyce Chitsulo as a development-conscious leader who prioritized national progress over partisan politics.
“Joyce Chitsulo was a pace-setter in development. I therefore name this facility Joyce Chitsulo Stadium,” Chakwera said.
Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, alongside Senior Chief Nthache, commended President Chakwera’s inclusive leadership, highlighting his efforts to distribute development projects across the country regardless of region or tribe.
Joyce Chitsulo passed away on June 6, 2025, at the age of 47, after collapsing at her home in Lilongwe.
She was remembered for her dedication to public service and her work as Chairperson of the Public Appointments Committee in Parliament.
