Lazarous Chakwera released a Statement to Media in which he addressed several items that are currently in the headlines in Malawi papers. The leader of MCP once again failed miserably to tell Malawians how he would handle issues if he was ever to become President.
It is now clear that Lazarus Chakwera is a follower not a leader. When the issue of ill-advised salary hikes was blotched by the Mutharika government, he waited until Malawians showed disapproval before making comment. Even Peter Mutharika beat him to the punch by rescinding the salary hike. He was very critical but to date he has not deferred his Salary.
So instead of addressing real issues affecting Malawians and how he would resolve them or mitigate them he chose to follow public opinion once again a week later and accuse Mutharika of Vandalism at Lumbadzi Police Station.
The aspiring President of Malawi then once again jumped on the statements by the Secretary General of DPP Ecklen Kudontoni, once again following Sunday paper opinions from Raphael Tenthani and other on the subject.
Clearly Lazarus Chakwera knows Peter Mutharika can never condone the stupid statements made by Kudontoni. Instead of taking a higher morale ground the Pastor chose to make political statements that will not help anyone. Such statements should be left to his spokespeople like Jessie Kabwila.
“In my earlier statement when I commented on the statements made by the Secretary General of the DPP in Mzuzu I said that if the DPP cannot separate party and state then talk of reforms is an insult to all Malawians”, said Lazarus Chakwera
Chakwera needed to tell us what he would do as President instead of piling on and joining the choir of Mutharika haters.
“A police station or police cell is a state institution. Police stations are not party property. It is an abuse of the office of President for the President in full DPP regalia to visit and write on a wall of a police cell.
We teach our children that writing on walls is bad manners, how can we continue to tell them that, if the president goes about committing acts of vandalism. If the DPP has issues with the arrest and incarceration of President Mutharika then they should bring an action against whosoever they think was wrongfully responsible for the arrest.
If an example were needed late Nelson Mandela President of South Africa spent a good part of 27years in a cell at Robben Island, he never abused his office by writing on the wall of his cell when he became President.
I demand that the President and the DPP must do the honourable thing of repainting the Police cell at Lumbadzi and restoring it to its former neutral colours. Whilst they are at it, they might as well just repaint the whole Lumbadzi police station and the Police officers’ houses as a gesture of goodwill” commented Chakwera
These are simply political statements which do not serve Malawians but clearly made to win favour in some quarters. If the writing on the walls of the police station so disturbed Chakwera, he will get his chance if he ever becomes President of this country which appears to be more and more unlikely.
