Chakwera, US secretary Blinken reflect on best ways to expand bilateral relationship

WASHINGTON-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera on Saturday, March 19, 2022 wrapped up his engagements of the fifth United Nations (UN) Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in Washington DC by holding talks with the United States (US) Secretary of States, Anthony Blinken.

The two reflected on best ways to expand the US-Malawi diplomatic relationships.

President Chakwera underlined how influential the Malawi’s diplomatic relations with the United States, since the 1960s, have brought significant value to all key sectors of human undertaking including Health, Agriculture, Education, Social Services and Democracy.

“Malawi will continue harnessing all bilateral and Multilateral opportunities with with like -minded nations with a sole aim of transforming the livelihoods of our people,” said Chakwera.

The Malawi leader also reiterated Malawi’s commitment to entrench justice and human rights by fully eradicating detrimental social vices such as human trafficking and child labour.

Blinken spoke highly on Malawi’s democratic infrastructure which he termed as a remarkable democratic success story owing to the political and governance events of the past three years.

The Secretary of State also reaffirmed the US Position in Supporting the reforms Malawi has embarked on to orient administrative and governance systems so that they respond to the needs of Malawians .

The discussion of the two also found common ground in their shared commitment in calling for peace in Ukraine and cessation of all forms of aggression.

On Friday March 18, 2022, President Chakwera also had a long talk with the Director General of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristallina Georgieva discussing the micro economic in Malawi.

The two agreed to align their mutual partnership around Malawi’s short and long term development efforts as guided by Social-economic Recovery Plan (SERP), Malawi Vision 2063 and its first decade implementation strategy plan called MW2063 Implementation Plan ( MIP1).

Chakwera will return back home from New York on Monday, March 21, 2022 at 9:30 hours, through the Kamuzu International Airport in the Malawi’s Capital City, Lilongwe.
