LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera on Thursday, July 3, 2025 received six letters of Credence from foreign envoys accredited to the Republic of Malawi on a non-residential basis at Kamuzu Palace in the capital Lilongwe.
The six envoys including Maria del Rosario Mina-Rojas, Ambassador-designate of the Republic of Colombia; Lilian Tomitom, High Commissioner-designate of the Republic of Kenya; Cuthbert Carlson Nadeska Imara, Ambassador designate of the Republic of Nicaragua; Siraj Ahmad Khan, High Commissioner-designate of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan; Illyas Ali Hassan, Ambassador-designate of the Federal Republic of Somalia; and Hüseyin Barbaros Dicle, Ambassador-designate of the Republic of Türkiye.
Speaking after presenting letters of Credence to President Chakwera, Turkish Ambassador, Hüseyin Barbaros Dicle pledged to strengthen bilateral ties with Malawi in trade, investment, education, and agriculture
Dicle says, “I’m looking forward to better relations between Turkey and Malawi. So Malawi is a very important country for us. Historically, it’s an important country.
“And now this year, actually, our trade volume with Malawi has been doubled. It’s $60 million and usually, Turkey is a net importer from Malawi”.
Ambassador Dicle adds, “There are a lot of issues in our common agenda. Education is one of them. Defense industry could be another issue. Yesterday, I visited the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), actually, so we also discussed opportunities that we can do better in terms of the UN in terms of the regional issues, because Turkey’s presence is getting more high in Africa.
“We have now 44 embassies throughout Africa. We used to have eight embassies in 2008 so our relations, traditionally, is very much related with the northern and eastern Africa now, but we are in field in Southern Africa as well, so, and we have a very candid discussion with President Chakwera today”.
He concluded, “President Chakwera also wanted me to come more often to Malawi, and I promised him that I’m going to come more often, and together, we will check opportunities to have a better exchange of high level visits between two countries and more trade, more commerce, more investment here from Turkey.
“I’m trying to attract, actually, business people and new investors from Turkey to come here and to have exchange with their Malawian counterparts. There are huge opportunities here that we need to tap together”.
