Chakwera’s Tonse Govt 100 days: CDEDI worried with Malawi leader’s volte-face on campaign promises

CDEDI worried with new Malawi leader Lazarus Chakwera’s volte-face on campaign promises

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has asked Malawians to prepare for another five years of disappointments following the departure by the Tonse Alliance administration from its campaign promises.

CDEDI revealed this in a statement issued on Friday October 2 signed by CDEDI executive director, Sylvester Namiwa.

In the statement, Namiwa said Tonse Alliance made a lot of well-meaning campaign promises coupled with the powerful speech made by President Chakwera on July 6, 2020 at Kamuzu Barracks when he officially received a sword of command from the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) but the organisation has come to a conclusion that the promises were dubious.

Among others, CDEDI expressed disappointment in the president’s appointment into cabinet of family members, siblings, spouses, cronies, hypocritical fight against nepotism by appointing 45 percent of the cabinet members from Lilongwe District, lip service on his commitment to make independent the offices of the Inspector General (IG)of the Malawi Police Service (MPS), the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), and the empowerment of the office of the Vice President and the sudden change of tune on the universal fertilizer subsidy programme.

CDEDI acknowledged that it is close to impossible to fund all the promises in one financial year but President Chakwera would clearly explain what would happen to the deferred Tonse Alliance Campaign promises before Malawians conclude that he is a liar.

“While we are commending government for walking the talk by operationalizing the much-awaited Access To Information (ATI) legislation, already there are calls from some quarters for the Ministry of Information to slow down the process, especially on the regulations guiding the operations of the ATI law, citing lack of inclusive discussions on the draft regulations”, said Namiwa.

He also said that Malawians have witnessed clear signs of selective application of justice in the way the Tonse Alliance government is handling the fight against corruption and abuse of power by the previous regime.

CDEDI has observed that Tonse Alliance is giving a blind eye to corruption scandals involving members of the Alliance including the issues surrounding the sale of the Presidential Jet by the former regime of Dr. Joyce Banda and the mysterious fire that gutted the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) House in Blantyre.

CDEDI has also condemned the recent pattern by President Chakwera which has shown signs of political persecution such as putting on quarantine over 10 (ten) Principal Secretaries (PSs) with no work to do at the Capital Hill on the basis that they are perceived to have been sympathizers of the former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime.

The organisation has asked President Chakwera to discipline his party loyalists following Mr. Harry Mkandawire’s attack on the vice president Dr.Chilima and his UTM party at a political rally in Karonga district.
