BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost )-Opposition leader in Parliament, George Chaponda, has criticized the failure to arrest perpetrators of political violence, arguing that this fuels further violence and erodes public trust in the police, especially as the country prepares for September 16 general elections.

Chaponda’s statement follows the torching of a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vehicle in Mponela, Dowa, on Sunday.

He condemned the incident, suggesting it was intended to silence government critics.

Chaponda demanded that police make arrests to bring those responsible to justice.

He also called on President Lazarus Chakwera to take decisive action against political violence, beyond mere condemnation.

He further appealed to Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to mediate between conflicting groups to foster tolerance and peace in the country.

On Sunday, unknown individuals set fire to a DPP party vehicle in Mponela, Dowa, as party supporters returned from a political rally in Ntchisi district.
