Chewa Heritage Foundation holds cultural night for fundraising homage to Gawa Undi

Chewa Heritage Foundation (CHEF), a cultural and charitable grouping is scheduled to hold a Chewa Cultural Night in a bid to showcase the tribe’s customs and norms, and raise funds for homage to loyal King, Kalonga Gawa Undu in Zambia which is slated on July 3, 2015 at Crossroads Hotel in the capital Lilongwe.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Maravi Post on Wednesday in the capital Lilongwe, Professor Kanyama Phiri, CHEP’s Chairperson said the cultural night aimed at celebrating the Chewa culture, history and contributions people of the tribe have made towards community development and the nation at large.

 

“The cultural night will be first of its kind in the history of the Chewa people in Malawi as we will be also giving awards to those individuals who have served better the tribe’s values and norms beyond questionable attributes.

“The event is also part of fundraising for resources which will be need for this year’s homage to the Chewa King, Kalonga Gawa Undi as we hold such annual event at Mkaika headquarters in Zambia for the Kulamba ceremony which is held in August.

“The occasion is for all Malawians therefore we expect all other tribes to be part of us as we belong to one nation. We also expect President Mutharika to grace the cultural night as he is the custodian of Malawi diverse culture”, delighted Professor Kanyama.

Echoing on the same, Edward Chileka Deputy Organizing Chairperson of the Chewa Cultural Night said series of traditional dances, local foods, poetry will mesmerized the event with an extension invitation to other tribes’ cultural activities to the event.

“There will be traditional dances such as Gule wamkulu, Chisamba, Mnjedza, Mganda, Chiterera and Chimtali with live music performance from talented chewa artist including Tygrin-The Nyau King, Symon and Kendal, Mbenjere, Bem Mankhamba, Maria Chidzanja Nkhoma and Nduna Zachewa and also the standing comedy by Chindime while poetry will recited by the Q, Malewezi, Nyamaliki Nthiwatiwa and Njonjojo.

“The standard entry fee is at MK20, 000, VIP is MK50, 000 and VVIP at MK100, 000 but those won’t make it to the event can contribute formally through CHEF secretariat with any amount toward the fundraising”, urges Chileka.

Chewa Heritage Foundation (CHEP) was established early 2004 with aim of preserving customs, values and traditions of Chewa people in Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi with  over 13 million people and 137 chiefs under its operation.
