Children in Karonga the northern district of Malawi are carrying the burden of the country’s hunger and economic turmoil Maravi post can reveal.

According to our finding, number of children are being send to sell different commodities as well as begging in some public offices.

Among the children are those under 11 years of age who are selling items like plastic bags, oranges, sweets among others.

Speaking in a random interview, some of the concern children told The Maravi post they are doing this in order to find food.

“We have nothing to eat at home and we are selling these plastic bags so that we can be given something to eat at home.” said some of the children.

According to the children, the items they are selling belong to the business people around the trading centers.

“We get K10 from five plastic bags we sold and K100 from a basin of oranges. For a day we make K300 maximum and K200 from oranges,” they disclosed.

However, some business people admitted to this reporter about the development saying the children are the one approaching them.

“They are the ones coming to us, and you know there is nothing we can do to help them apart from giving them this simple work. And I can tell you that we make loss from this kind of thing,” said some business people.

Meanwhile, Karonga district council officials have planned to put some bylaws of restricting children doing business in the trading centers.

According to the district chairperson Patrick Kishombe, child vending will be a history in the Karonga especially with the coming in of the bylaws.

Some None Governmental Organizations that deals issues of child protection in the district have condemned the development.
