Chinese Embassy commits U$80 million towards Malawi’s Judicial Complex construction

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Chinese Embassy has committed over US$80 million (about MK140 billion) toward the construction of Malawi Judicial Complex construction in the capital Lilongwe.

On Friday, Malawi and China therefore signed the Implementation Agreement for China-aid Malawi towards project.

Malawi’s Minister of Justice, Titus Mvalo and Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Lu Xu have signed the legal instruments for the project on Saturday, April 19, 2025.

Speaking at a signing ceremony of the agreement for the project, Xu said the initiative will be done through a grant and works will commence between the end of this year and early next year.

Ambassador Xu observed that a robust judicial system not only safeguards long term peace and stability, but also plays a solid foundation for well being of the people.

In his remarks, Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo said apart from strategically locating the Judiciary closer to the other two government branches, (executive and legislature) the complex will solve infrastructure challenges in the Judiciary with enough space capable of accommodating 30 judges.

Mvalo added that the Judicial Complex will not just be a physical structure, but a powerful statement of Malawi’s resolve to entrench access to justice, independence of the Judiciary, and effective delivery of legal services.

Attorney General (AG) Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda witnessed also the signing ceremony of the project’s legal commitment and agreement.

The complex, to be constructed opposite Parliament Building in Lilongwe, will accommodate Judiciary Headquarters, the Supreme Court and all six divisions of the High Court of Malawi.

Currently, Malawi Judiciary is headquartered in Blantyre.

The Judicial Complex is located opposite Malawi Parliament building in the city centre, Lilongwe.
