BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Finance Minister Simplex Chithyola Banda has categorically disputed claims of being arrested for bribing party delegates ahead of Malawi Congress Party (MCP)’s August elective convention.

In a brief interview with The Maravi Post on Thursday afternoon, July 18, 2024, Chithyola who is vying for the MCP Secretary General post, laughed off the claims, “What crime have I committed to be arrested? I just arrived from China for official duties, now I’m meeting party delegates in Blantyre”.

“This is the campaign period within the party ahead of the MCP convention. How I’m going to get votes If I remain home without meeting delegates on what change I will bring to the party if voted into the position of MCP SG?” queries soft-spoken Chithyola.

The Maravi Post spot check at Mount Soche, Hotel in Blantyre a while ago, bumped into Chithyola while interacting with delegates for a meet.

Malawi Police Service also refused social media rumors of Chithyola’s arrest.

On Tuesday, Chithyola told The Nation Newspaper that some media houses are targeting him while leaving other party aspirants on how they are supporting party delegates’ meetings ahead of the convention.

MCP plans to hold an elective convention slated for August 8 to 15, 2024 in the capital Lilongwe.

Chithyola is vying for MCP Secretary General to unseat Mkaka.
