Ivan Mwakapenda and Khumbo Ng’ambi where Chitipa’s hero’s as their second half strikes were enough to edge them closer to survival with 3 matches to wind-up the season.
After holding Karonga United to a 2-2 draw on Saturday Mlatho’s defeat means their topflight status is hanging by a thread as they will need to win their remaining 2 fixtures while also hoping teams above them in the log drop points to give them a chance of an unlikely escape.
Speaking in a post-match interview Chitipa United coach Alex Ngwira, hailed his boys for their resilience to keep creating goal-scoring opportunities despite missing many chances.
“I thought my lads were wonderful today from start to finish and the 2-0 score line doesn’t reflect our dominance today, we really should have won by a bigger score,” said Ngwira.
However, Team Manager Blessings Makangela, bemoaned the standards of the refereeing, attributing it to the defeat.
“The officiation today left a bitter taste in our mouth as it was very poor especially with the first goal as the goal shouldn’t have been allowed to stand as the whole ball didn’t cross over the line and that decision demoralised our players hence failed to play our usual game as we were frustrated,” he said.
With the win Savenda Chitipa United move up a place on the log table to 11th with 31 points to their name from 27 matches while Mlatho stay in 15th with 23 points from 28 games respectively.
