Chiwalo brings strong financial, leadership background as new Malawi FA Secretary General

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has appointed Abdul Rahman Chiwalo as its new Secretary General, effective August 18, 2025.

His selection marks a pivotal moment for the country’s football governing body as it seeks to strengthen both its administrative efficiency and long-term vision for the game.

FAM President Fleetwood Haiya says on his Facebook page, the appointment followed a transparent and lawful recruitment process, countering claims that the decision was politically or personally driven.

“We ensured this was handled professionally and in line with our statutes,” Haiya stated.

Chiwalo steps into the position previously held by Alfred Gunda, who served for eight years before his contract ended.

A holder of a Master’s degree in Financial Management, a Master’s in Economic Policy, and a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Chiwalo has built a strong career in financial and organizational leadership.

He has worked as Management Accountant at Southern Region Water Board (SRWB), Senior External Auditor at Durban Nondanga, and most recently served as Chairperson of the Eastern Region Football Association.

Beyond Malawi, Chiwalo has collaborated with multiple organizations locally and internationally, bringing a wealth of governance and operational experience to his new role.
