LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s grouping under the banner concerned Citizens is demanding explanation behind MK9.7 billion legal fee from legal practitioners in the country who were representing UTM and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in the electoral case.

In a statement signed by Philip Kamangirah, the chairperson
for the group, it has been disclosed that the legal team of the two parties that consisted of less than 20 colleagues demanded a legal fee that mounted to MK9.7 billion in a period of less than a year.

Reports have however revealed that Legal Counsels with less than 10 years’ experience are supposed to be paid MK30 000 per hour while those who been in practice for above 10 years are supposed to receive MK40 000 per hour and MK55 000 per hour for senior counsels.

The group has therefore demanded the judicial looting to be explained and those responsible come in the open and be accountable to the people of Malawi.

The concerned Citizens have also beseeched the Malawi Law Society to ensure that the legal profession charges reasonable fee in line with the taxation bill and not with a spirit of self-enrichment while respecting the rule of law and in the interest of economic justice.
