“Cultural preservation vital for unity”-Chakwera

NTCHEU-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera has emphasised that cultural preservation remains vital in fostering unity among Malawians.

Chakwera made the remarks on Saturday at Nkolimbo Village in Ntcheu, where he attended the Maseko Ngoni’s annual cultural gathering, popularly known as Umhlangano.

The Malawi leader observes that the spirit of shared responsibility, as demonstrated by the Maseko Ngoni, is crucial for the country’s development.

“Cultural events such as the Umhlangano provide a platform for inter-cultural exchange. They bring people from different backgrounds together,” said Chakwera.

The President commended Inkosi Ya Makosi Gomani V for his visionary leadership in promoting culture, environmental conservation, and education, among other areas.

On his part, Inkosi Ya Makosi Gomani V called for unity among all cultures in the country.

He described the event as an auspicious heritage occasion where the Ngoni share cultural values and honour the spirits of their forefathers.

“Culture is very important for anyone to know where they come from and where they are going,” said Gomani V.

Maseko Ngoni communities from across Malawi and abroad including South Africa, Eswatini, and Mozambique attended the event.

Earlier in the morning, Gomani V led his subjects in a sacrificial ceremony known as Mkhwisulo at the Gomani Chikuse I National Monument.
