Mutharika says is not related to Kabambe

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-Former Malawi President Peter Mutharika who is also opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader on Saturday, April 17, 2021 came out of the cocoon disputing social media claims that he has endorsed former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) governor Dr. Dalitso Kabambe to take over the party’s leadership.

Mutharika also disputed long time claims that Kabambe was his nephew nor his relations arguing that the notion was not adding up.

The former Malawi leader told the news conference at his residence in the lakeshore district of Mangochi that DPP members are eligible to contest for the party leadership post during convention in 2023.

Mutharika disclosed that he will leave the party presidency when proper mechanisms for power transition in DPP are in order that the party be back into power 2024/2025.

“I might sound tribalistic but the truth is, Dr. Kabambe is not my nephew or related. He is from Mang’anja while am from Lomwe tribe in Thyolo. I haven’t endorsed anyone to take over the party leadership after me.

“Every DPP member is eligible to contest as party president during 2023 convention. But before that, I have to put the party in order for proper power transition,” opens up Mutharika.

The former Malawi leader however accused President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse government of political persecution citing his personal bank accounts being frozen for no apparent reasons.

“(Chakwera) government is to suffocate DPP completely that we be in one party state which will not work. This is the reasons government has blocked my bank accounts that DPP be not supported. This must stop,” fumed Mutharika.

The DPP leaders was speaking for the first time after defeated in June 23, 2020’s court-sanctioned Fresh Presidential elections.
