Dorothy, JETU face MRA officials’ humiliations over suspected unregistered vehicle

JETU and Dorothy

By Twink Jones Gadama

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-It was a day like any other for Dorothy Kingston when she set off to drop off her friend JETU and attend a meeting in Blantyre.

Little did she know that a routine traffic stop at Nathenje roadblock would spiral into a humiliating ordeal that would leave her feeling violated and belittled.

As Dorothy and her driver were stopped by a police officer for their driver’s license and car insurance, they never could have imagined the chain of events that would follow.

The officer, upon realizing that the car’s papers did not match the vehicle, called in MRA officer Sheila Mumba.

What ensued was a series of events that would leave Dorothy and her companions feeling like criminals in their own country.

Sheila Mumba, instead of giving them a chance to rectify the situation, immediately jumped to conclusions and accused them of tax evasion.

Despite their pleas and the arrival of the car seller with proper documentation, Sheila remained adamant in her decision to detain them.

The situation escalated to the point where they were forced out of their car, humiliated in front of onlookers, and dragged to the MRA office like common criminals.

The treatment they received at the hands of the police officers was nothing short of inhumane.

They were threatened, bullied, and subjected to emotional distress throughout the ordeal.

To add insult to injury, JETU was even physically assaulted, leaving her injured and in tears.

The entire ordeal lasted for over five hours, during which they were denied basic human rights and subjected to unwarranted humiliation.

The repercussions of this ordeal go beyond just the emotional trauma suffered by Dorothy and her companions.

The unlawful seizure of their property, the defamation of their character by the officers, and the loss of business due to the delay all point to a gross mishandling of the situation by the authorities involved.

The actions of the MRA officers not only violated their rights but also exposed them to danger and left them feeling utterly powerless in the face of unjust treatment.

It is imperative that the Malawi Revenue Authority takes responsibility for the damages caused by their officers’ actions.

The assault, emotional distress, harassment, and violation of human rights experienced by Dorothy and her companions cannot go unnoticed or unaddressed.

Justice must be served, and measures must be put in place to ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future.

In the end, Dorothy Kingston’s ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the power dynamics at play in our society and the importance of holding authorities accountable for their actions.

No one should have to endure the kind of humiliation and mistreatment that Dorothy and her companions faced that day.

It is a wake-up call for all of us to stand up against injustice and fight for our rights, no matter the circumstances.
