LILONGWE- (MaraviPost)-The Democratic Progressive Party has urged the Malawi Congress Party to allow the rule of law to operate freely in the country.
DPP spokesperson Shadrick Namalomba made the remarks in response to claims by the MCP that the arrest of its senior officials is politically motivated and meant to settle scores.
Namalomba told Times that Malawi is a country governed by laws and that no individual or political party is above the law.
He said it is important for the MCP to stop interfering with legal processes and instead allow institutions mandated to enforce the law to do their work independently.
According to Namalomba, MCP leaders during their time in government often took the law into their own hands.
He alleged that the party routinely violated legal procedures without regard for future consequences.
Namalomba further accused the MCP of attempting to hide behind political rhetoric in order to falsely implicate the DPP in matters where the law is simply taking its course.
He argued that the MCP should not seek refuge in political narratives when it is facing the consequences of its own actions.
The DPP spokesperson claimed that Malawians suffered greatly under MCP rule and that many citizens have long been asking when those responsible would be held accountable.
He stressed that anyone who has not broken the law has no reason to fear, but those who violated the law must be prepared to face justice.
Namalomba concluded by reiterating that justice must be applied equally to all, regardless of political affiliation, if Malawi is to uphold democracy and the rule of law.
