LILONGWE (MaraviPost)-Northern region Democratic Progressive Party(DPP) Members of Parliament are distancing themselves from Goodall Gondwe’s proposal that Peter Mutharika should stand for the party’s presidency in the next general elections.
The three lawmakers including Welani Chilenga, Julius Mwase and Mungasurwa Mwambande for Chitipa South, Nkhatabay North and Karonga Central Constituencies respectively.
Addressing the news conference Thursday, April 6, 2023 at Parliament building with DPP’s member of the National governing council (NGC),Ken Msonda said Gondwe did not consult the members regardless that the party promotes democracy.
Msonda said no one is more northerner as all are equal in the party.
He said as much as they respect Peter Muntharika, the party has other presidential aspirants who need motivation from the members .
Msonda observes that for the party to win the next elections it will need unity and it’s very wrong to impose candidates.
“We can’t be imposing candidates on each other as new candidates are already on the ground in preparation for the next elections,”said Msonda.
He therefore condemned the party leadership as it has failed to disclose the money raised from blue night.
Former Minister of finance, Goodall Gondwe announced to the nation on Wednesday, April 5, DPP members from the north endorsed Muntharika for presidency come 2025 elections.
DPP is expected to go for elective convention in July this year.
