LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (ECAM) has embarked on a US$100,000 child labor project in the country’s five districts aiming at withdrawing children from child labour.
ECAM Executive Director George Khaki disclosed on Monday, March 28, 2022 adding that the country has 2.1 million women and children in child labor.
Khaki said the organization is part of SADC meeting which is underway discussing with other countries on how to combat child labor in the country.
He said currently the country’s rate of child labor stands at 38 percent and the project will be implemented in the districts of Mulanje, Chitipa, Thyolo, Mzimba and Mchinji.
He also disclosed that the organization is working on reviewing the code of conduct on the elimination of child labour in Malawi.
The project is implemented by Accelerating Action for the Elimination of Child Labour in Supply Chains in Africa (ACCEL Africa) with the funding from the Netherlands.
