LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Former special assistant to President Lazarus Chakwera Pastor Martin Thom has filed a suit against the Ministry of Homeland Security and the Office of the President and Cabinet, through the Attorney General, demanding sum of 1.6 billion kwacha in compensation for unlawful arrest in August last year.
Through his lawyer Sylvester Ayuba James, Pastor Thom argues that the conduct of the State by arresting him was not followed by evidenc.
The pastor argues that he did not have hand in smuggling to parliament a bill that sought authorisation to borrow US$116 million for the construction of houses for the police, Malawi Defence Force (MDF) and the Department of Immigration.
Ayuba James says his client was later cleared by parliament on the matter hence the claim.
Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda says his office is challenging the amount being claimed.
Chakaka Nyirenda says Pastor Thom, through his lawyer, has not provided evidence that he indeed lost business worth MK1.6 billion kwacha.
Surprisingly, Thom was not charged and never spend a night in cell but only questioned at the police.
A week after his arrest, Thom was on Dubai business trip until now he is demanding MK1.6 billion for lose of business.
