Fair analysis on Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera leadership

President Lazarus Chakwera says he cant rate himself

By Burnett Munthali

This is a fair and brief analysis on President Lazarus Chakwera’s leaders in Tonse government just a year in power and months.

Our contributor Burnett Munthali unpacks Chakwera’s style of leadership coupled with promises made during June 2020 President Elections campaign:

Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is currently President of Malawi.

Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera is a Malawian theologian and politician who has served as President of Malawi since June 2020. In addition to the Presidency, he also gave himself a cabinet portfolio as Minister of Defence. He was born on April 5, 1955 (age 66 years),Lilongwe. Chakwera’s spouse is Monica Chakwera (married in 1977)

Office of the President
Dr. Lazarus Chakwera ascended to the Office of President of the republic of Malawi in 2020 June fresh presidential election after the 2019 election was challenged and nullified in court.

The following is a brief overview of Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s education.

Trinity International University(2000),
University of South Africa (1991

There’s no leadership skills in Chakwera, he’s undecided on his own cabinet and all empty talk.

Some Malawians are busy singing praise songs for Dr. Lazarus Chakwera saying he is a great leader, yet there is no leadership in him at all. He is a doubting Thomas and slow in taking action even to reshuffle his own cabinet. Other Malawians are riding the tide of misplaced outrage by pointing an accusing finger to the former ruling DPP for the economic hardships in the country.

The reality is that Dr Chakwera has shown time and time again that he lacks the ability to lead Malawi and end corruption. He installed a government that critics called ‘clueless’, included thieves and looters. There’s more stealing in the current government than corruption more than ever before in the history of Malawi.

Chakwera later made controversial appointments, including a bloated congregation of praise worship advisors and to statutory entities that also included party or court zealots and violated statutory provisions.

Chakwera appointments are based on:

Rot and
Thank you folks for working with me during demonstrations and court case.

Chakwera’s promises have so far failed in the first one and a half years. There is completely nothing taking place on the ground that electorates can appreciate except for empty talk and promises. The arrogant government spokesperson has recently boastfully said government is making economic recovery plans to solve the current situation.

Gospel Kazako has always been defensive of the Tonse government and repeatedly said the current government is doing much better than the previous DPP government but many Malawians are failing to figure out the progress being talked about.

The Malawi kwacha keeps falling and prices of essential commodities keep rising each day. It is doubtful if he will deliver his manifesto in the next three remaining years as 2025 is slowly coming closer again for another election. Malawi has many issues to be sorted out, one of them which includes road networks throughout the country.

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera gave himself 40% pay rise in June 2021 which makes him one of the highest paid leaders in Africa. This is happening when Malawi is among the poorest countries in the world. Should we say this is one of the much talked about servant leadership which the President kept preaching during his campaign? We should wait and see this series of drama.
