Lilongwe, February 26, 2016: Police on Thursday arrested a 39 year-old man for impersonating a Police officer in Lilongwe.
Confirming the incidence to the Malawi News Agency (Mana), Lilongwe Police Station Public Relations Officer (PRO) Inspector Kingsley Dandaula identified the suspect as Masautso Kalaliki from Nkhuku village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Malili in Lilongwe.
“On 13th February 2016, the suspect went to the area of TA Kalumba and cheated people that he was a Police officer from the Human Resource Department at the National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe and that he was recruiting people who wanted to join the Malawi Police Service,” Dandaula said.
He said the suspect was not only demanding money for the services but was also collecting original school certificates and other professional documents from the interested people.
Dandaula said on 23rd February 2016, the suspect went back to the clients and told them that the interviews would be conducted on 5th March, 2016 and that they should give him money to facilitate for their prospective entry into the police service and managed to collect around K50, 000 and disappeared.
He said the clients became suspicious of his demand for money and original certificates and reported the matter to Police who arrested him and searched his house.
“The police went to the suspects’ house where they found various Malawi Junior Certificates, certificates of attendance, certificates of recognition and other professional documents,” said Dandaula.
Several people who were cheated and have identified their certificates include; McDonald Kalolo 27, from Khudzu village, TA Kalumba in Lilongwe, Chepetsani Dzinkambani 29, from Msampha 2 village, Mervin Banda 27, from Chitukula village and Sanjani Phiri 24 from Msampha village all from TA Kalumba in Lilongwe among others.
Meanwhile, The Police are informing the general public that when they have vacancies, they advertise in the newspapers and or radio and that they do not have a Recruiting Officer for the vacancies.
Dandaula said the suspect is expected to answer two charges of personating a Police officer and theft.
