RABAT-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Scorchers head coach Lovemore Fazili says he is confident his side will be ready for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after their final international friendly against Ghana which scheduled for Thursday in Morocco.
Speaking to MaraviPost,on Wednesday ,Fazili described the match against Ghana as an important part of the team’s preparations before the continental tournament kicks off.
He said the technical panel is using the friendly to assess the team’s progress and make final adjustments ahead of the championship.
According to Fazili, one of the main priorities is to improve the team’s ability to convert scoring opportunities into goals.
He said the coaching staff has been working on every department of the team including goalkeeping, defence, midfield and attack, to ensure the Scorchers are fully prepared.
Fazili believes the players have responded positively to training and are showing signs of improvement as the tournament draws closer.
The Scorchers recently played a friendly match against hosts Morocco, losing 2-1 in a closely contested encounter last Thursday.
Despite the defeat, Fazili said the performance gave the technical panel valuable lessons on areas that still need improvement.
He added that the players themselves understand the mistakes they made against Morocco and are determined not to repeat them.
The coach expressed confidence that the lessons learned from the Morocco match will help the team produce a stronger display against Ghana.
Fazili also welcomed the arrival of Temwa Chawinga, saying her return has significantly strengthened the team’s attacking options.
The Kansas City Current forward is expected to play a leading role as Malawi seeks to compete against Africa’s best teams at WAFCON for the first time.
Malawi has been drawn in a tough Group C alongside defending champions Nigeria, Egypt and COSAFA rivals Zambia.
The Scorchers will begin their WAFCON campaign against defending champions Nigeria on July 28, 2026.
The team will then face Egypt on August 1, 2026, before concluding their group stage matches against Zambia on August 5, 2026.
