The first group of Team Malawi’s delegation to the 11th edition of the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games has safely arrived in Windhoek, Namibia.
The team touched down at midnight, marking the official start of Malawi’s participation in one of the region’s most prestigious multi-sport youth competitions.
Among the athletes in the first group are representatives from volleyball, basketball, and men’s football teams.
Also included in the delegation are athletes competing in the Paralympics, Special Olympics, and e-sports categories.
Accompanying the athletes are key officials, including the Chief Executive Officer of the Malawi National Council of Sports, Henry Kamata.
Also present in the first group is Jameson Ndalama, Director of Sports in the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
According to officials, Team Malawi is traveling in separate groups due to what the Sports Council has described as “some logistical challenges.”
The second batch of the delegation is scheduled to depart this morning through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe.
Meanwhile, the final group is expected to depart later today, completing the full team’s journey to Namibia.
Despite the travel delays, all members of the delegation are being flown via a chartered flight.
This phased departure approach has raised questions about planning, but officials maintain that all efforts are being made to ensure the entire team arrives on time and fully prepared.
The Region 5 Youth Games provide a platform for young athletes from across Southern Africa to showcase their talents and foster regional unity through sport.
As the competition kicks off, expectations are high for Team Malawi to make a strong showing in various disciplines.
Officials, coaches, and supporters alike are hopeful that despite the initial logistical hiccups, the team’s spirit and determination will shine through on the continental stage.
