In a significant move aimed at addressing the educational challenges faced by financially disadvantaged students in Malawi, former President Dr. Joyce Banda is set to launch a scholarship program this month to assist approximately 2,000 tertiary and secondary school students on the verge of dropping out due to financial constraints. The initiative, spearheaded by the Joyce Banda Foundation, is expected to have a substantial impact on the lives of these students, particularly girls.
With an estimated budget of K300 million, the program aims to support 1,000 fourth-year college students and an equal number of secondary school students, with a significant emphasis on aiding female students from underprivileged backgrounds. Dr. Banda announced the initiative during a conversation with Zodiak, expressing her commitment to ensuring that young people, especially girls, have access to quality education and the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
Scheduled for launch on October 16th in Blantyre, the scholarship program represents a concerted effort to combat the rising dropout rates in Malawi’s education system. Dr. Banda emphasized the importance of education as a fundamental right and a key driver of societal progress. “This initiative is not just about providing financial support; it’s about empowering young women and men to achieve their full potential,” she stated.
The former President’s initiative comes at a critical time when many students face insurmountable financial barriers that hinder their educational pursuits. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these challenges, leaving many families struggling to afford basic necessities, let alone educational expenses. By targeting students who are most at risk of dropping out, the Joyce Banda Foundation aims to create a pathway for continued education and personal growth.
In her remarks, Dr. Banda also reiterated her longstanding advocacy for the introduction of free secondary education in Malawi. She argued that implementing such a policy would be the only sustainable solution to the current high school dropout rates, which disproportionately affect students from low-income families. “No child should be denied an education because of their family’s financial situation. Free secondary education would ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive,” she asserted.
The Joyce Banda Foundation’s scholarship program is expected to partner with various stakeholders, including educational institutions and civil society organizations, to maximize its reach and effectiveness.
