Is it an ambush or what? Is it not on record that the big Honcho assured the nation and the whole world that he is gay friendly and that his government will not only going to arrest us but will also protect us to do as we wish? Why now withdrawing the case? These are the questions which a few gays in Malawi are struggling to find their answers prompting them to issue an angry statement to express their shock towards government move to discontinue Msonda’s case.
Msonda was summoned by a magistrate’s court in the southern town of Blantyre after he told media that “gays were worse than dogs” and should be killed.
The matter was withdrawn from the court by Director of Public Prosecution Mary Kachale a day before the case was scheduled to be heard.
“… the matter is a major one and needs to be treated maturely, the action of government leaves us wondering as to the safety of us of the gay community in the midst of the fears that we have been having all along,” says the statement signed released on Thursday by Rainbow Generation’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Mwai.
The group questioned how “people who have no influence in get prosecuted for merely uttering words disrespectful to those in authority like the president ” while a prominent figure with “ a large following [like Msonda] goes with no condemnation from the authorities [for his utterings]”.
“We recently saw the president and the nation condemning the barbaric acts against people with albinism on the basis that they have a right to life.
“We are wondering if the condemning of this kind of speech would be any different from the condemnation of killing albinos by the president,” read the statement in part.
Rainbow Generation came into limelight a few days before Ken Msonda’s scheduled court appearance seeking support for the cause of the LGBTI in Malawi.
