LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Political commentator George Chaima has called on all political aspirants to instill discipline among their supporters ahead of the 2025 general elections.
Chaima made the appeal as the official campaign period, as set by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), draws closer, scheduled to begin on July 14 and end on September 14, 2025.
He emphasized that with only 85 days remaining before Malawians go to the polls to elect their president, members of parliament, and local government representatives, political conduct must be exemplary.
Chaima observed that early signs of provocation and disorder among supporters from various political camps threaten the peace and credibility of the upcoming electoral process.
He further urged political leaders to take responsibility for their followers’ actions and promote messages of unity, tolerance, and issue-based campaigns.
Chaima also appealed to the Malawi Police Service to maintain fairness and impartiality when enforcing laws during the campaign period.
He stressed that the law must be applied uniformly regardless of the political party involved, warning that biased law enforcement could lead to unrest and mistrust in the electoral process.
Meanwhile, the Malawi Electoral Commission has issued a warning to all contesting political parties, candidates, and their supporters against spreading false or defamatory information about the elections.
MEC stated that any individual or grouping found guilty of such misconduct will face legal consequences in line with the country’s electoral laws.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the 2025 elections are conducted in a free, fair, and credible manner.
As Malawi prepares for the elections, stakeholders continue to urge political players and citizens alike to uphold peace, integrity, and respect for democratic values.
