It becomes clear that a company has “made it,” not only when it has made a ridiculous amount of money, but when it starts diversifying and collaborating with other players to achieve a common goal and they all become successful. Examples are Virgin of Richard Branson, Sony and Apple just to mention a few that have diversfied and started their own labels or work with artists to support arts and culture.
Giantplus might have been in the tourism and travel industries but it has now started up a new label called Giantplus Records. The label partners Malawi’s fastest growing ICT company C-Tech Systems, Determination Tourism company, Multi_Talent Firm and Roman Photography of Felix Patchani Junior. This project brings together Giantplus, Malawi Youth in Tourism ,
So, what does this mean to Malawi Music? That Giantplus is going to be the next Kalawa Records of Malawi? Putting out artists that they think are awesome? Seems so.
This week an announcement was made about new artists being signed to the GR label. Mzuzu based artists Blackface Family and Lady Pace were announced subtly via Twitter of their new allegiance to GR Music.
“Giantplus is on a journey to create an arts empire, that will use music and arts in a way that has not been explored before on the local scene. Its actually more than just music”, said Mc Donald Nyoni of Multi_Talented Firm who is one of the directors.
“We would like to create hits and brands and we are on a long term project which will see music gain a new standing on the continent and beyond. This is from making music, videos, promotion, distribution, organising shows for our artists and creating brands out of these talents“. Explained Dennis Imaan the company’s creative director.
Giantplus is a fusion of music, travel, fashion and new media/ ICT! It has an element of Fashion with designers on the company’s ladder.
“There is no word to the media about what the monetary agreements we are in with this new partnership, but apparently this is a combination of skills and companies run by individuals full of passion and creativity and financial resources is not an issue” said Imaan.
Felix Patchani jnr a producer and photography director added, “The signing of Lady Pace and Blackface Family is the begining of a huge journey for the label and is exciting for both the artists and the label because it seems the synergy is already there between the duo as they have worked together on previous projects, which means one thing…good music”.
The company has hinted of big projects with tourism and travel operators in Malawi and also a massive online distribution of its merchandise and brand activation.
They are also in partnership with the Young Bahamian Music Society which is offering mentorship and more opportunities to their artists by a top Bahamian based American music producer, sound engineer and youth culture advocate Mr Dwight Jonesof Young Bahamian Music Society. He is the Founding Director of The Studio @ Compass Point – Nassua, in The Bahamas.
Now the question is, what has Giantplus Records brought to the Malawi music industry?
Only Time will Tell!
