The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that, starting today, all farmers will be required to establish demonstration fields of at least one hectare for crop trials.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Benedicto Chambo, made this declaration in Rumphi District during a tour of various initiatives under his ministry.

Chambo explained that the move is aimed at enabling farmers and seed companies to closely monitor the performance of different crop varieties.

He emphasized that demonstration fields will provide a practical platform for farmers to observe how specific seeds respond to different conditions, thereby informing their choices for mass cultivation.

Chambo further noted that this strategy will also help bridge the knowledge gap between research institutions, seed producers, and local farmers.

He said that by seeing the crops in a live environment, farmers will gain confidence in the technologies and be more likely to adopt improved seed varieties and farming methods.

The Deputy Minister also highlighted that the initiative aligns with government efforts to modernize agriculture and promote increased productivity and food security across the country.

He urged farmers to treat demonstration plots with the same care and seriousness as their main fields, since they are a critical learning tool.

Chambo concluded by calling on agricultural extension officers to support farmers in establishing and maintaining these fields, ensuring that the information gathered benefits the wider farming community.
