Gusto Gadama fined MK3.4m for Cyprus, Jerusalem University’s illegal operation in Malawi

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Principal Resident Magistrate Roderick Michongwe on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, ordered Gusto Gadama to pay a fine of MK3.4 million or in default serve four years in prison for operating higher education institutions and conferring higher education qualifications without the authority of the National Council for Higher Education (Nche).

Gadama, who was operating Cyprus International Institute and Jerusalem University, appeared before the court today for sentencing after being convicted on his plea.

Making the ruling, Michongwe observed that the convict Gadama was well aware of what is required to operate a university and offer higher education qualifications but he decided to go against the law.

The magistrate also said the conduct by Gadama saw several people losing money ‘as they paid for nothing’.

He added that people were fooled into thinking they were qualified when they had no qualifications.

Michongwe therefore went ahead to order Gadama to pay a fine of MK1.7 million on each count or in default serve 2 years in prison for each count.

The custodial sentences therefore are to run consecutively.

Nche chief executive officer Ambumulire Phiri was satisfied with the ruling saying it is a step in the right direction.

She said the sentence would send a lesson to other institutions that are operating without authority from Nche.
