Health Minister Jean Kalirani says Malawi is making strides in Child Mortality reduction

MaraviPost iReport: Government has retaliated of its high commitment to ending under-age child deaths in the country.

Minister of Health Jean Kalirani said this on Monday during the launch and dissemination of the Countdown case study results, Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP), Child health strategy and Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (EmONC) Assessment Report which has revealed that Malawi has met Millennium Development Goal 4 that calls for reduction of Child mortality.

 

The report reveals that Malawi managed to save 280, 000 children lives through scaling up of high-impact child health interventions.

The report further indicates that Malawi’s under-five mortality rate has significantly slashed down from 244 per 1000 live births to 71.

Speaking at the event, Kalirani expressed delight that Malawi has managed to beat the target before its deadline in September.

“We have registered positive results in prevention of children deaths and illness because of Immunization, Insecticide treated bed nets and treatment of childhood illnesses (Diarrhoea, Pneumonia and Malaria)”, said Kalirani.

The progress means that ministry of health is working tirelessly to improving the children livelihoods as stipulated in UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child(ACRWC).

Kalirani further said that the Ministry of Health is fully committed together with necessary stakeholders to mobilize the necessary resources and improve access to use of quality maternal and newborn health services in the country
